Software DxO PhotoLab 6

I saw this too. Not sure I’ll upgrade yet, at least not with what appears to be minimal upgrades. I’m assuming if I do upgrade, my filmpack plugin will still work? Sure don’t feel like buying that a second time.

I was very surprised by such an early release, since years DXO has released their image processing software around the end of October, usually within the last ~10 days, so having it now right in the first week was very unexpected.

They still offer a 31-day trial, so everyone can give the new version a try, PL6 installes flawlessly besides any existing versions of PhotoLab, so you don't have to screw around with your existing installation.

Here are my first impressions pretty much only regarding the new XD noise reduction:
  • It is slightly slower than the regular DeepPRIME, exporting a Pen-F RAW (20MP) to a full size JPG takes ~3 seconds on my computer, using the very same file but activating XD instead, the export takes ~4 seconds.
  • The files indeed look even cleaner and preserve more detail, depending on the image it is sometimes more, sometimes less visible.
  • DeepPRIME XD does not work on my Fujifilm X-Trans files! At least not those from X100V and X-Pro3, from what I gathered, X-T3 and X-T4 also aren't supported.

No need to worry Chris, since FilmPack is handled as a standalone application and licence, there is no need to even touch the installation: DXO PhotoLab 6 simply detects your installed FilmPack and enables it right away, that works flawlessly even for the trial version of PL6.

Since I still have the DxO test pictures that was used for testing DxO DeepPRIME speed when it came out I will share a link to them: DxO_TestPics
(NB, these are not my pictures and the copyright is in the file names.)
It would be interesting to hear what speed you can get from DeepPRIME XD.
I will download the trial and check the speed tonight on my PC.

Every time I pick up DXO again, I get frustrated by how hard it is to manage colors from my DNGs from the GR and Pentax. I just cannot find my way around successful color tweaking, when PhotoLab opens up my file the colors look atrocious most of the time. I wish DXO would completely remake their toolset.

Have now downloaded the trial and processed the images mentioned above.

4 DxO Test Pictures.
Only the DxO standard profile and noise reduction applied to the files.
Times as reported by DxO PL

I first ran a baseline processing all 4 pictures in PL5 with DeepPRIME.
DxO PL5 DeepPRIME 48s

Then on to PL6 and XD
DxO PL6 DeepPRIME XD 50s (2nd time 50s)
DxO PL6 DeepPRIME 45s

I looked at the Taskmanager during processing to try to see if I could se any difference and I think I can see a difference at least between PL5 and PL6, the GPU (Radeon RX 5500 XT) was at 40% for some of the time for PL5, but for PL6 it seemed to stay at a lower level, maybe 13%. The same for the CPU it seemed to be less loaded with PL6.

When it comes to how well the NR works I can't really tell, DeepPRIME and DeepPRIME XD looks the same to me on my monitors.
The ISO of the pictures are from 2500 to 5000 and I think they where taken with so called full frame cameras.

If you’re also a Lightroom user, you can use Adobe’s DCP profiles. Another option is to buy profiles from Huelight. Either way, you don’t have to stick with the DxO default colour profiles.

I didn't realize Huelight profiles existed for the K-1 II, nor that they worked with PhotoLab. Thanks for that! I'll probably get them.

Thanks for this, particularly regarding Fujifilm files. I have been trying out the standalone PureRaw2 for the last month and was impressed enough that I planned to buy it. Just as I was about to do so, the launch of PL6 was announced. I couldn't decide whether to go with PR or get the whole package, but now that I know that PL doesn't work with X-Trans I can discount it and go back to PR.

I'm guessing at some later date they may introduce an updated version of PureRaw with DeepPrimeXD that will also work on X-Trans.

DxO PL works with Fuji cameras AFAIK, check out the supported cameras page: DxO Supported Cameras & Lenses
It might be that DeepPRIME XD does not yet support X-Trans and I don't know if DeepPRIME does, but if DeepPRIME does I am sure that XD will also further on.

Bo is right, DXO PhotoLab 6 works with Fujifilm X-Trans files just like PhotoLab 5 did, the issues only appears with the new DeepPRIME XD noise reduction, that doesn't work with X-Trans as of now. The known DeepPRIME noise reduction works very well with X-Trans.

According to a german photography magazine, DXO will release an update for PL6 sometime in the future to enable X-Trans support for XD noise reduction. They are also working on support for the most recent X-H2 camera, the X-H2S is already supported.

Thanks. To clarify, I know PL and DP work with X-Trans but DP XD doesn't. Phil , thanks for the info on future updates. That's what I was trying to work out and could not find any information on. I have been playing around with XD using files from my Sony camera and here is one below that I was impressed with. This was taken at night ISO 3200 on my RX100v at f4 and underexposed by 3 stops to get a 1/10 shutter speed which is as much as I can hold on the RX100. I ran it through XD then back in LR boosted the exposure back up by the 3 stops and made a few other minor tweaks. The buildings in the background are blurred because of the f4 setting but the sky is very clear and the details of the leaves on the tree in the foreground are pretty good. For comparison, the second shot is from the original RAW and the third is from the original RAW with the 3 stops added back.

DxO PhotoLab 6 has been released today.
I got a message about the upgrade at €99 for the Elite version.

I have not read any reviews but here is a link to one: DxO PhotoLab 6 brings DeepPRIME XD and a new ReTouch tool
A couple of hours ago there was no reviews available but now they seem to turn up.
Thanks for the heads up. I'm on the DxO mailing list but didn't receive notification of this. If I recall correctly, in previous years there's been a hefty discount on Cyber Monday that beats the initial upgrade offer. I can't see any major new features in Elite 6 so will wait until later in the year.

I've downloaded the DxO PL 6 trial primarily to experiment with DeepPRIME XD.
I'm getting a blue cast on images using XD that doesn't appear using the 'normal' DeepPRIME.
This happens on all images from both RW2 (Panasonic) and ORF (Olympus) RAW files. I've tried different profiles, turning off all other settings, rebooting, sacrificing a goat at midnight; still the blue cast appears but wall & skin tones are accurate, it's just greys that change.
Here's an example, both images from DxO PL6, exported one after the other without changing any other settings.
Left = XD with blue cast. Right = normal DeepPRIME with correctly coloured grey suit.

Anyone else getting this?

My experience with M4/3 RAW files is the same as my Pentax DNGs: Lightroom and DXO both have really bland and borderline ugly profiles. I bought Huelight/Color Fidelity's profiles for my K-1 (cost $25 if I remember correctly), and now the profile creates a starting point that's super pleasing. I went years ignoring advice on custom profiles but I've experienced it for myself now. They're worth it - bear in mind this is my experience with the K-1 profiles, I haven't purchased any for M4/3 (yet).

Agree absolutely. Earlier this month I bought Color Fidelity's profiles for the Olympus OM-D EM5iii and the difference was immediate: no more crappy skin tones and a far better base to work from than the LR & DxO defaults. Worth every penny.

Unfortunately the blue cast appears on grey areas on all images processed with XD irrespective of the profile applied. It's worse with the Oly M43 files but still noticeable with images from the Panasonic compact. I wouldn't mind too much but the improvement between XD and normal DeppPRIME is, to my eyes, negligible. It's put me off upgrading DxO especially as there's very little else in the way of new features. :(

What’s with the weird green artifacts by the white rose? It’s in both…odd blotches.

Mark, you're not alone........

Thank you! I spent several hours with different file formats trying every setting and combination of settings to rule out operator error. How the heck did this get past DxO's QA / testing process before release?

The blotches are not in the original images which clearly shows the foliage in the buttonhole. I've played around with this and have the answer: the artefacts are a result of the Mac producing a screen grab of a user defined area in PNG format. In the process, the subtle tones and texture of the foliage get 'blotchified'. One lives and learns.
