Australian Photography Rules?

Isoterica

Hall of Famer
Any residents or people that have been there, are there any photography rules I should be aware of on my vacation in Sydney? Are there any taboos.. like don't take photos of such and such that I should be careful of?

Also any vacationer suggestions in the Sydney area or reasonable day-drive distance would be appreciated. We've a hotel on the beach though I've heard the water's not that warm? Also see the weather is mid 70's to low 80's with a lot of storms here and there predicted. I guess we'll get wet then LOL

Yeah Kristen don't mention Melbournians (or Melbourne) in ear-shot of a Sydney-sider...they can't stand them and will use violence to emphasise the point!!! I know I am a Sydney boy...though I've grown a little more tolerant of folks further south.

Lots of nice places in and around Sydney depending on how far you want to drive.

Beaches should be very pleasant....been a few shark scares on the East Coast of late...and I don't mean Gummy Sharks. That's the problem with Australia we don;t have large predators (other than people) that can kill you, but we have a myriad of smaller things that can exact that end in a far more protracted and painful way. For example you are going to Sydney, home of the world's deadliest spider called the Sydney Funnel Web. (y) Don't stress as you're unlikely to come across one, but just as a taster....;)

You'll love it...we do....right folks? Aussie, Aussie, Aussie...:polling:

Let's see. We have the world's deadliest snake, spider and shark. We have the worlds biggest and most agressive crocodile. In the last week we've had a shark attack, two people died from eating mushrooms and a kangaroo put an 8 year old in hospital. All within 3 hours of Sydney. So as long as you don't go in the ocean, the bush and most peoples back yards you'll be OK. Oh, don't eat the food, just in case there's more of those deaths head (the real name) mushrooms in circulation. And just to round things out a 5 meter crocoldile tried to eat a lawnmower last week.

Welcome to Australia ;-)

Now seriously, there are no particular photography taboos. There is no legal right to privacy laws in Oz, although some respect goes a long way. Sydney is a large sprawling city so there's plenty to see and do photographically. If you give me a hint at your preferences I can give you some places to go. The iconic stuff (harbour bridge/opera house) are next to each other and beaches like Bondi or Manly are only a short train/ferry ride away.

Here's an accurate and up to date analasys of the laws regarding photography in NSW

4020 Φ NSW Photographer's Rights

ALl the usual things regarding taking care of your gear and not getting it stolen should apply. There are camera stores everywhere so batteries/chargers/memory cards aren't a problem. There are no buildings you can't photograph from the outside. But most of our shopping malls are private property so they can ask you to stop shooting or ask you to leave. Only police can detain you or demand ID. Ignore security guards unless you are in private property. No one has the legal right to touch you or your gear and you are never obliged to hand over/delete images. Even police would need to arrest you to touch your gear.

Mostly though, like most places, the further you get from the city, the friendlier people get.

I opened the thread because I thought it'd be like "Australian Rules Football" except applied to photography.

Knew about the sharks the jelly fish and the spiders and you guys have some really strange animals there but that is cool too. Actually we are vacationing but.. if we like it there.. maybe we'll hide out :D

It's funny you guys open with that.. the animals. I get wolves in the yard sometimes, and deer.. but you know not the vicious deer with teeth. I guess I'll watch the ocean then since we are beach side. Three feet of water I hear but then I should see a fin, right?

Family, adult children, one is drinking age there but not where we live, would she get served there? Other than that whatever entertainment there is there and around.. it's not a photo shoot its a vacation that I will be documenting of course for memory sake.

And I will keep the friendly thing in mind. Husband was to NZ last year and he liked it a lot [I'm not supposed to say that am I?!] so at least he's have driving practice since you guys do it a bit.. on the wrong side :D

check with the Fosters Boys

Hahaha!! So true, there's a bit of rivalry between these two states

But like what Stillshunter has mentioned it depends on where are you planning to drive around to. It's summer at the moment so Manly beach would be a nice place to hang around, There's the Rocks in the CBD which has some nice architecture and great to take some street shots. I'd reccomend the Blue Mountains (about an 1 to 2 hours train ride) for some landscapes specially with the "3 sisters" rock formation. Then there's the Opera house & Sydney Harbour bridge which is quite popular.

Be sure to try our exquisite Aussie cuisine......Meatpies, Chiko rolls, South Melbourne Dim Sims and Fish and Chips by the beach, just be careful with the Seagulls and Drop bears

Dont forget the sunscreen (y)

Bats are cool LOL!

Seagulls and drop bears?

 We warn visitors about 'dropbears' as a joke, it's a big carnivorous koala that drops on your head bum first

The seagulls arent a joke though, if your having fish and chips by the beach you'll probably find a flock of seagulls hanging around you waiting and competing for your chips.

The seagulls do that here too. We throw our 'french fries' at them..

The only real rule is just have fun, Sydney is cool city, funny nobody has mentioned the huge Flying Fox bats, yet

We've had one calamity to the next in these last few weeks getting ready.. i should sleep on that flight for sure. I hope anyway and yes.. then the fun shall ensue. Thanks Bob!

Is it correct to use those two words in the one sentence?

Fosters has done a remarkable advertising campaign convincing at least Americans that Australians hold Fosters in high regard. Talking to some Aussie friends of mine, they are, to put i mildly, of a different opinion than the advertising leads us to believe. Is that about right?

Its often said that we export Fosters because no self respecting Aussie will drink it. I don't drink beer at all so I have no clue :)
