New game for February

I was pondering upon photography, and the pictures from various members of the happy band. There are some photos that I look at and I know who it is before I see the name/avatar, they have a particular look. How much of photography is the bit you do when you get home?

So I was thinking it could be an interesting game if we tried processing each others images. How you would set it up in an organised (and fair) way I don't know. But I thought it might be interesting to see what various people would do with an image.

Madness? Thoughts?

This sounds interesting, as everyone has their 'signature look' it'll be interesting how others would percieve or 'narrate' the image.

Not particularly sure about implementation though, perhaps a submission by all participants in RAW format which can be processed for a day and to be commented on for 2 ?

I like the idea also. It could be quite eye opening to see how others would pp your image. Quite an instructive exercise. If nothing else it will maybe make you more aware of your shortcomings and/or strengths..

I really agree with this, learning through examples rather than criticism as some people react badly to criticism no matter how constructive they are.

Excellent idea Heather. Being Mr Practical (yeah right!!!) how do we exchange RAW files? If I'm to play I only shoot and process RAW - so we're looking at 10-15Mb files each time. Also were you looking at a group processing one person's file or setting up a buddy system. If the latter then I'd be keen to know how the multiple transfers will work, if the latter how the common storage might pan out.

Great idea! Count me in! So much to learn from one like this!!! Better than my idea for "Film February"

So best think of a catchy title for it! (y)

I don't know if I would participate in this one, but could you convert the various RAW's to DNG's for a more universal "RAW" to work with? Can a DNG be uploaded to the Gallery? If so, then maybe they could be put in a Gallery folder, and then the participants could pick one at random to work with. I don't know, just some thoughts.

DNG or RAW of any variety will overload the gallery in no time and Amin will need more space (so will we, given that we do have a limit on uploads). Its just not going to be reasonable to expect to process the original file especially by sticking it in the forum's gallery.. Other forums manage well enough with jpg, and I can't see why it wouldn't work here.

[edit] I'd think it would be useful if there were a separate forum for P&P/crits. Perhaps a thread per shot (so no hijacking with other shots) and see what everyone comes up with. Use flickr/imageshack etc for storage and linking, so as not to overload the gallery here.

This type of 'workshop challenge' works well on other forums. For tidiness I think we all need to work on the same image with a new one each week. A DNG might be useful for compatibility with various software and plugins. The image does not have to be perfect, in fact probably better if it has faults of exposure, composition etc.

I suspect we can host the RAW (dng) here on SC, hopefully Amin can confirm this.

I think smaller jpegs would be fine for the purpose of this exercise, some of these raw files are way bigger than 10mb, if all you want to see is how each person would work with an image you do not need large files

(y) Bob just tried it with your Paradise Captured image and it seemed to work
In Gallery - Full size image
Right Click
Save As (to desktop)

Got a file - "DSCF2409sm" saved there. Now the file was only 825 x 606 (404kb) does this sound right? AS I normally upload 1024 on the longest side.

If this checks out then you might just have a way ahead Heather.....sorry for meddling. Back to you

Ah, guys, you overestimate me. I'm merely taking the strain for Herman and being the "Image stimulator" - in terms of practical "how to" I hand the baton over. It might be good to do one image per thread per day with everyone allocated a day for their own picture so everyone gets a turn.

Basic rules -
The image would have to have no PP at all at the start.
It doesn't have to be a new picture, it can be one you've been struggling with.
Only one reworking per person or it'll be massive.
Obviously post what software you used and how you did it (if you can remember)
If you upload it to Gallery or 3rd party hosting, you MUST credit the person who pushed the shutter. So maybe like SIJ-03 names could be Stillshunter/PPHeatherTheVet or something.

How is that for a start?
