Grip for big stuff

Just out of curiosity: What's the point of the grip? I mean is it really just a grip or does it add some functionality to the cam (except 'gripability' of course :D).

I mean why have both a grip and a battery grip when the whole functionality could have been archived with just the latter?

Cheers,

Think you'll find the idea is offer more secure and steady hand hold when working with long telphoto lenses, especially if it offers good AF with original 4/3 lesnes like the 150mm f2 etc which are substantial in size and weight.

No Idea if these are showing anything real, or just a combination of Photoshop and Phantasy :D
I suspect they're pretty real - shouldn't be too tough to do once you have a clear shot at the sensor and lens mount, which are the same from body to body. Looks like a nice size to me, almost identical to the G3, but a slightly different right/left balance, with a bit more to the left of the lens and a bit more to the right. A bit smaller than the EP3 (aside from the hump of course) and a good deal smaller than the GH2 (and I'm sure a lot less bulky). I loved the feel of the EP3 and G3, wasn't crazy about the GH2, so I suspect this will feel just fine in my hand.

I just noticed that the silver versions seem to have a fake leather padding on the body, while the black versions have this weaved fabric / rubber texture which kind of reminds me of carbon fibre... looks like they think of silver as more of a retro / tribute colour and black as the more modern / techy colour?

The size looks doable to me, slightly larger than the G3 when viewed from the front but just a bit smaller than the GH2, and probably considerably thinner when viewed from above than either Panasonic because it has a shallower EVF and grip, respectively...

Looks about the same as the G3 to me, with a bit less body to the right of the lens and a bit more to the left. The same guy has comparisons with the Nex 7 and X-Pro 1 on his Flickr page also. More or less identical to the Nex but for the hump and a LOT smaller than the X-Pro 1. These were just from the front though.

I just learned that Olympus is also releasing the weather-proof MMF-3 4/3 adapter so weather-proof 4/3 lenses can be used as such with the E-M5. Nice.
