Calm before the storm?

Is it just a young Starling?

The tail colour is just a reflection from the roof tiles, (edit: not true - the tale is a brownish red - corrected below by Paul and later by me when I managed to get a better look at the bird)

SW France - today

The close ups are a "big crop" from the full image, (first image)

Thanks Paul - you are correct - the "red" is not a reflection - I've just tracked him down with my "bins" as he is still around the "hamlet" - the back of the tail (and rump), are also the same colour

Hope that you are feeling OK

This guy seems to be making the most noise this evening

Heavy crops, unsuitable lens

I visited Staverton in south Devon today to photograph steam trains. Whilst waiting between trains there was some bird action, although I was stuck with the P/L 45mm as my "longest" lens, so really not suitable, but I've done something I don't normally do, heavy cropping.

Dipper in Staverton Mill Leat. This guy had been closer, but if I'd reached for a camera then it would have been off. This is some minutes later. It had briefly, and I do mean briefly, perched on the bridge I was on, just feet away

Just got a new lens - a Nikon 300mm f4 prime, (the only affordable long Nikon prime as far as I'm concerned)

I am really pleased - just look at the quality of the crops - we had good light today, so although it is a little heavy it is OK to hand hold - the do not make a VR lens - so it's non VR

hand held at 400 ISO at f4 1/800 sec

f4 seems as good as f8, (especially if you crop - which maybe is logical) - so it's f4 all the time

AF is also really good

- 1st image is the full size image - then two crops

I was going to comment after seeing Barrie's Little Egret ... when I first went to Cornwall 20-odd years ago, it was possible to glimpse the occasional one deep up a creek somewhere ... much to the disgusted envy of the bloke who had got me interested in birding, and who despite being a life-long birder (unlike Johnny-come-lately me) had never seen one ... now they're two a penny!
But are these from Winginkris LEs?

Anyway, a very successful bird
