Leica My Accessorized X1 : Artisan & Artist Case, "thumbs-up", Marumi +3 Lens, OVF)

7021253157_337385aae2_c.jpg

I had purchased my X1 used and it already came with the Leica 36mm Brightview OVF, Kiwiphoto Adapter, B+W Kassman Circular Polarizer and the Artisan & Artist half case.

Things I've added are Marumi +3 Achromat Close-up lens, Generic Thumbs up grip, Olympus VF-1 OVF (34mm), Nicna King Kong II Glass (9-Layer) Screen Protector (rainbow imaging)

Purpose of this post:
1. Show off my X1 (Artisan & Artist Half case and Nicna screen protector)
2. Generic Thumbs-up grip
3. Show the Marumi Lens
4. Optical Viewfinder: Leica 36mm vs Olympus 34mm

Artisan & Artist leather half-case for Leica X1 with built in grip and Nicna King Kong II ($10 amazon. I originally had the Giottos, but it fell off and would not restick. The Nicna is from Rainbow Imaging and cost less than half the price of the Giottos for relatively the same amount of protection. Giottos 12-layer / Nicna 9-Layer)

Generic "Thumbs-up" grip ($50 ebay): HUGE difference in handling. I just couldn't imaging paying ~$150usd for the real name brand product and really did not need the OVF hot-shoe either. My thinking was that if I am using the OVF then, camera to eye and head will stabilize the shot, however when shooting with the EVF the thumbs up becomes very handy, especially when shooting vertical. Feels more natural to have hand in a "C"

49mm Marumi +3 Achromat close-up lens ($50 amazon)
I really love taking close-up detail shots (not MACRO) but you know close-up. One of the X1 weaker points to me was the inability to get closer than 30cm. With this attached to the Kiwiphoto adapter the minimum focus distance is reduced by HALF. 15cm or 6" for us yankees. This makes a HUGE difference in not only capturing details, but also provides more bokehlicious shots. IMO this screw on lens is a must have for the X1.

100% no crop

Wow, it must have taken some time to make that post, but that's an awesome setup you're showing off here. To my eyes the Leica X1 is one of the sexiest current cameras, and it looks all the more sexy the way you've "clothed" it.

Black and stealthy....just a hint of the red dot :D and a splash of silver

Its really a phenomenal camera. I was fortunate enough to obtain it used for a great price. For the $2000 new price not so sure, but if you come across one for $1000-1300, its definitely in the top 3 best compact point and shoot as far as quality, build, and UI goes.

A lot of reviews were made with the firmware version 1.0 and since the release of version 2.0 the camera is a completely different beast. Its a different style of shooting. I actually do not use Auto Focus often, but prefer zone focusing.

Any improvements on the auto focus with the v2.0 FW update? I hear the major step-up from the X1 to the X2 (other than the EVF) is the AF speed. Otherwise I hear the IQ from the original X may be even better than the higher MP 2nd generation. Yep the "hears" are intentional as I've not had the pleasure of either's company as yet...just been doing a lot of reading.

Mark have you gone off the deep end?

This is a really old thread - beautiful camera, however.;)

Maybe I have gone off the deep end BB, maybe I have. Oh who am I kidding it's pretty plain to see for anyone whose met me ;)

And you're right again. So that's x2 (pardon the pun). In digital terms this is an old thread, but very sadly it is one of the most recent in the Leica X forum. I still can't quite understand the underwhelming take-up of this serious compact, especially one with this sort of look. Then again I gave this camera no heed back then either but only now after have used an M for some time that I can't tear me eyes away. Hmmm....
