Hello serious compact users,

I've been shooting strictly digital since I bought my first in '93. I've owned way too many digital cameras since then, but have settled on an Olympus E-PL1, and Canon G10, as my serious compacts. I'm still coming to terms with the E-PL1, but have committed to learning all I can about how to get the most from it. I've shot with mainly P&S until 2004 when I bought a Minolta A2 bridge camera. Bought my first dSLR in 2005 (Pentax *ist DS), and sold my last one (Olympus e330) this past year. For the type of shooting I do, the m.43, and high-end compacts seem to satisfy my needs.

Glad to see a site dedicated to these little gems where I can post both 4/3, and Canon G shots. Hopefully, I can be a contributor to the site, and not just a beneficiary.

See you mostly on the Micro Four Thirds, and Fixed Lens Digital forums.

Good shooting,
Otto...

Hi Otto. Welcome to SC. 1993! I didn't realise there were digital cameras that early - it must have been quite a machine.

Otto, thanks so much for taking the time for such a fine introduction! I'm with Olli, I didn't realize there were digital cameras then either....I was still using my little Olympus Stylus when I couldn't focus quickly enough with my OM-1.

I'm very glad you've joined us here, Otto, and look forward to your involvement!:D

Hi Olli,

At the time, it seemed like a miracle. I could capture around 22 495x366 (.18mb) monotone images before having to connect it to my computer for download. That was the only way to clear the "memory" for the next 22 shots. It has a fixed f/4.5 65mm equiv. lens and fixed 200 ISO. Shutter speeds of 1/30-1/2000, and MSRP of $695.

I still have it, and it still works. Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows 3.1 system to use it on. It would be fun to play with it again.

FWIW I run Windows 3.1 on Ubuntu using a program called Virtual Box. It works really well. I like to play Wolfenstein on it (yes I am a major geek and nerd)

I also remember the fotoman camera back in the day. I made lots of commissions selling them :D However even before the fotoman hit the scene Sony sold the Mavica in the 1980s that stored an electronic photo on 2 inch disks. It was analog however not digital and you viewed them on a TV screen. It had the same CCD imager that sony used in video cameras in the 1980s only it shot still NTSC images at a resolution of 570 × 490 pixels
