This is something I wanted to test since I've sold the 20/1.7 and bought the 17/1.8. The 20/1.7 results were better, but I lost many shots due to slow AF. Still some GAS however :)
Your findings are the reason why I still own both lenses - the 17mm f/1.8 takes nice pictures, but the 20mm f/1.7 has a crisper, contrastier rendering - more 3D. And it's also sharper. But to be honest, as long as I don't attempt to print large, the disadvantages of the 17mm are actually minute.
