SIJ - Day 19: Sterling Memorial Library Tower from Cloisters Courtyard

This shot was taken from the exact spot I took yesterday's shot - the Sterling Library Cloisters Courtyard which before now I have not been able to access. I tried again today and it was open... so...

This is the library tower which houses the book stacks for the library. A while back I did some genealogical research (results of which have been mentioned in recent publications of the Irish Texts Society), and much of that work was done here. Much of the bibliography for this work was based on primary and secondary sources held in this library. I suppose having Gutenberg Bibles sort of changes the scale of what is rare, but I was routinely pulling books from these "stacks" which are worth thousands of dollars on the open market - and checking them out and taking them home! This blew my mind.

It has only been recently that they have climate controlled the stacks. I recall it was routinely in the 100's of degrees in there during the summer...

Anyway, the tower is a bit large, squat and blocky when viewed dead on. I found this angle, embellished as it is with some context and detail, to be pleasing...

I may return for another shot from the courtyard at a later time, but it will have to wait for a late afternoon or overcast day. Tomorrow I will shoot across town at Johnathan Edwards College (Divinity), weather permitting.
Glad to see the colour is back - those old stones and bricks have so much character.

I'm waiting to see a guys head peer over the parapet!

"You don't frighten us, English pig-dogs! Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person! I blow my nose at you, so-called Ah-thoor Keeng, you and all your silly English K-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-niggits! ... now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!"

One of my favorite scenes along with...

"How do you know she is a witch?"
"She looks like one."
...
"Did you dress her up like this?"
"No, no, no! Yes, yes. A bit. But she's got a wart."

Monty Python?;)

A glorious day you had for this one, Seaain!

So interesting to hear about this library's updating its methods of protecting its contents.

An impressive and fortress like structure, it surely seems to be.

Love the Monty Python reference Seeain. Your series is really making me better appreciate architecture....which was not an abiding passion.

great texture, and a nice composition - up close and personal, but still showing the grandness of it all.

Love the monty python quotes:D although my favorite is the way the swallow conversation comes back at the end!
