Born in Zagreb (1950). Graduated in comparative literature and philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. In 1977, he gained his Masters at the same Faculty. In his dissertation he examined the book Della Poetica, written by the Croatian renaissance philosopher Frane Petrić. He gained his Doctorate in 1989 (also in Zagreb) with the thesis entitled Teatrabilni oblici folklora u Hrvatskoj [Theatrable Forms of Folklore in Croatia].

Since 1976 he has been working at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research. His research projects are interdisciplinary by nature: he does research on folk drama, oral literature, customs and rituals (mostly carnival), as well as other aspects of Croatian traditional culture, and looks at the theoretical and methodological questions surrounding folklore research.

Between 1975-1977 he taught aesthetics at the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Zagreb. From 1990 on, he periodically taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses for ethnology/cultural anthropology and folkloristics, both at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and at the Centre for Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb.

Since 1985 (from 1999 as the head) he has been a permanent member of the editorial board for the journal Narodna umjetnost. He has taken part in academic meetings in Croatia and abroad and published 5 books and more than 70 articles. Between 1999-2011 he has been the Director of the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research.
