My Visual Diary: turning my photos into art

Honestly, John, I've never before felt competent with pen and ink - as a kid, I mostly drew with pencils. At 15, I had extra tuition to learn to paint with oils, but none of that stuck. It turned out, I just needed the right tools for me! I've got a long way to go, but everyone here has been...

My Visual Diary: turning my photos into art

I finished this one last night. Sometimes when I'm walking around a street I remember to look up, as that is often where the most interesting details are! The reference photo was taken in Mannum main street with Fujifilm X30 compact. #platinum brush pen with noodlers lexington gray ink...

My Visual Diary: turning my photos into art

We're slowing down now, as I've returned to work. I drew this one as an antidote for the return to work life, after a very relaxing long service leave. This is a culmination of three special interests: photography, old cars, and drawing with fountain pens. I was very pleased with the result...

My Road Trip Diary 2024: Upper Murray River and Gippsland, Victoria Australia

We headed into the mountains in the direction of Bairnsdale, only stopping one night before reaching Omeo, at a campground beside Big River, which, at the end of summer, it wasn't - but it was utterly delightful, and I forgot to take a photo. The high country township of Omeo was a delight...

Wonderful! I've bought all my fountain pens online, as they're there aren't any of interest in shops near me, except a disposable Pilot V-pen (Varsity), which is actually a very nice writer, and possible to refill - YouTube is a great resource for such info.

Continuing onto the bridge over the Mitta Mitta River, we were delighted by the rapidly-changing colours, and the end-of-day calm.

My Visual Diary: turning my photos into art

This time I used a pencil! And I'm not too proud to admit that I drew around the photo to establish the border, AND ALSO marked important points around the edge of the frame for precision. It's cool, I'm allowed to. I've wanted to draw this one for a really long time. It turned out okay, but I...

Thank you, that's very creative! For years I have said that I take photos because I'm not patient or good enough at drawing, so this latest activity has taken me by surprise.

My Visual Diary: turning my photos into art

I maybe need to work on perspective more, and not using pencil as a starting point isn't helpful. Anyway, I enjoyed tackling something with more challenging perspective, and next time I'll use that pencil! The reference photo was taken at the end of 2015 in Broadford with my first Fujifilm X10...
