Leica Lens Shootout - 1959 50 Summicron DR vs new Summilux 50 asph

aaronz28

Regular
One was taken with the old DR lens, and the other taken with the new Summilux. There is a hint in one of the photos as to which is which (that I didn't intend to include but alas)
These were shot with my M240 and the new SF40 flash... which is absolutely perfect on the 240 unlike that huge boat anchor SF58 - the 40 still maintains perfect balance and the entire rig is lighter than most DSLRs i've shot with.
NOW - the old Cron needs about 12" of additional space to focus - and without mods, of course you can't use the close range setting, nor will it focus out to infinity - but i'm really thinking i'm gonna sell the ASPH, and just keep the old lens - have it modded - and shoot away!

Cheers

The DR Summicron and 1st type Rigid Summicrons are probably the best made of all Leica lenses. The fit of the optics to the barrel is incredible. The optical formula was generated using a computer, the design is slightly different from the collapsible lenses.

It is not an easy lens to take apart! The optics are individually matched to the barrel of the lens. "Fit and Finish", each one required a lot of finishing by hand.
