Leica Nikon DL18-50m vaporized ... a sign to wait-list an M10?

carlb

All-Pro
Two cameras with only their newness in common. And now, not even that: the Nikon will never be released.

I had plugged my new-camera cravings with a pre-order of the DL18-50. It was going to be a fantastic super-wide compact. But with that gone, there's nothing keeping my thoughts away from the M10.

Do I need the M10? Of course not. Do I really want it? Of course. Sometimes even a boomer bachelor has his limits. Is this one of them?

Maybe I should start a search for a nice
collapsible f4 90mm to keep my wallet safe(r).

The classic Collapsible 90/4 Elmar-

Nice Lens.

For Nikon: putting so many resources into a 1" format sensor, "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!"

They could have sold more Monochrome DF's.

That 1" back-lit sensor was to be a good one. After seeing what the Nikon 1 could do without the back-lit sensor, I was certain this was going to take superb pictures.

Can you imagine the pressure on the design team for the electronics of that project?

"The processor has critical bugs."
"PCBA team, make it work!"
"We tried, but can't work around the issues."
"The sunk costs are gone. We'll lose even more money to produce the cameras than scrapping them."
"Stop work. Layoffs begin next week."

Like nearly all layoffs, "doers" will get the brunt, managers and execs will keep their jobs (with a few exceptions).

An incredibly sad day for the people at Nikon.

The 90mm f4 search didn't take long:

Leica M Macro-Elmar-M 90mm f/4 Lens 11670 | eBay

Now a nice belt-clipping bag for the 90mm and 35mm, to swap out with the 21mm that's usually on the camera ...

Carl,

What happen to your T? Didn't you get the 11-23 with that body? Speaking of the Nikon 1, I had a the V1 at one time and got really great result from that little camera. Love the little 10mm lens.

I was actually looking at getting another 1 series again, maybe the V3. But the V1 is phenomenal.

Here are some shot I took back in 2015 using the V1.

Ha....the v1 is the camera of choice (digital) to mount my m glass!
But you are right....native lenses very good including the 32mm....which I don't have. Hmmmm. GAS STRIKE
Thanks Vince for the brotherhood.

Not sure I was clear.....I meant Nikon 1 32mm f1.2....on any on any Nikon 1 camera......but I am still at v1.

<...> What happen to your T? Didn't you get the 11-23 with that body?

I do have the T, and love the 11-23mm. It takes beautiful photos. I just don't ... bond with the T. My hope is that Leica will create a T mount camera as a slightly smaller "Q." complete with built-in EVF. I could quietly collect "T" lenses before they shoot-up when the "Leica QT" is announced. Look what happened with the EVF for the T: Bought it used for cheap; Leica M10 announced; and now they're up at $600.

<...> Speaking of the Nikon 1, I had a the V1 at one time and got really great result from that little camera.

Why the heck couldn't they have built the EVF in with the V3? Or built one into the Coolpix A? They'd be selling those like no-one's business.

Anyway, waiting on the collapsible f4 90mm to ship. Has my "new gear" focus for now, heh!

You have a point and other have made it as well across the blogosphere. The only reason I have not bought a coolpix A , although lurking for years, is sthat I have a Sony RX100 (Stellar) and a Coolpix would not change the way I shoot with a pocketable cam, except having to accept the limitation of no zoom. My guess is that even a Coolpix A with EVF would be a hard sell these days, as the RX100 (up to whatever iteration now) is still probably better.

Also, building in an EVF assumes the ability to raise sthe price. Nikon 1 cams unable to get that premium. Of course, a great EVF is what the generation that buys expensive cameras need.

I never could figure out the Leica T. The interface interesting, design sexy, size (eh?).....price (OK for body)....but then you slap a lens on it and it gets unwieldy (looking) and lenses again priced high. ONe thing to have high priced M lenses (which I don't) but another to have a collection of T lenses, although an argument has been made above in favor.

To assuage my GAS, acquired a Pentax ME Super (with certified CLA) and a couple of primes. About $100.....that's not bad for entertainment. Cheaper than a seat to an NHL game with decent location.

After the initial "ooh-ah!" for the T, I dropped interest for quite a while. Apparently everyone else did too. Because then I saw a steal on an 11-23mm, and piqued the "hmmm..."

Could piece together a T-camera, EVF, and 11-23mm for under $2k ... so I bit. Nice camera. Excellent lens. Superb pics. I just don't bond with the camera ...

The 18-50mm 1" back-lit sensor Nikon. That was going to be a stunner was my guess. And about as compact as you'll ever get for the image quality. But we'll never know.

That Pentax looks like a kick! Now if I could just figure out how to make "digital" rolls of 35mm, heh. "Camera backs" are too clunky.

The Pentax is a marvel of technology, very similar to a film OM, or perhaps slightly smaller? the finder is huge coverage, like a Nikon F....but without all the bulk.

Here's a little Pentax love.......
Also a shout out for the pen and handmaker of the Pen......Shallus Pen Company. Made in USA The barrel is inlaid wood in the pattern of the flag and is laser cut. All their pens are beautiful.

No, I do not get kickbacks. Pen for purposes of relative size.

OK...last one ...Athos, Porthos, Aramis 60 Elmarit R, flawless J3 with the incredible blue/purple coating (cap on darn it).. Pentax finder brighter and bigger than the SL, no slouch.

At some point Ihave to make a decision.....about what to keep and what to send off to a new home, that is, if I want to be serious about a 240 or 262. Leica has to start coming out with these M10's to get folks to part with their old, unwanted, outdated, underpowered, dusty 240's.
