I'm so glad this thread is still going strong and apologize for missing the recent action of late - beautiful shots! bbodine, I wish I could see yours in a larger size to appreciate it even more! Wonderful details and color, Jeff and retow - no matter which camera you choose, you always get what you're after. Love that swan image, retow.

I would really appreciate it anyone could tell me if they are using a DP1-X. I have the DP 1 and DP 2 which I got second hand. I love the cameras. However, the DP 1 is very slow. I would strongly consider getting the X version if it were a little faster as in write time.

They would make a perfect compliment to my X100.

Thanks so much!
Sorry Stanley, it appears that they are not using that camera since there've been no responses - but let's see if someone pops in who is?

Good old DP1 in Zurich. Its pixel level sharpness and clarity still needs to be reached by the younger generation large sensor compact cams.

The inherent sharpness in the DP2s I previously shot, and in the DP2x I'm shooting now, is amazing. The Foveon sensor really can do amazing things at times.

Hi Jeff, just visited your excellent web page. I hope we can read your DP2x user review soon? Despite having the X100, which I consider excellent, I might get the Sigma as well, for obvious reasons:D By the way where did you get yours from?

Thank you for the kind words. :) Sigma sent it to me (so I wish I had kinder things to say about the LCD screen they are still using in these cameras).

Thanks everyone...the DP1 is an often maligned but yet really good camera if you learn how to use it and accept its shortcomings.

ggibson, your two pictures are why I practically cry out whenever I see a DP foevon image! Gosh, they are beautiful! There's something extra, extra special about the colors and light that this camera and its iterations can capture in the hands of the right photographer.

I'd love to know about the details - where they were taken and I'm guessing that your second had to have been while using a tripod?

Meanwhile, I'd also like to invite you to stop by for a quick, or long, intro on our Welcomes and Introductions forum, if you've got the time.

Thank you so much for the kind words =)

These two were both taken near South Lake Tahoe in California. I woke up at 6am on vacation to get the early light. The mountains are pretty tall, so you can see only the top of the peaks in the second image were lit by the sunrise. The first shot was taken about an hour later when the sun was cresting the closest mountain and starting to lighten up this field. I used a tripod for both images.

For the first image I bracketed this composition, intending to use three exposures for an HDR image, but found it was necessary due to the DP1x's wide dynamic range. I played with an HDR version processed in photomatix, but ultimately liked this one as it was more natural. I did quite a bit of cloning to remove some telephone wires & a couple poles that were distracting.

The second image is a layered combination of a few different exposures. The background mountains were quite bright compared to the foreground, so this was unavoidable. To blur the water in the stream to this extent, I believe I had to set the shutter to 6 seconds. Even using ND8 + CPL filters, I ended up with some clipped highlights. Hopefully it doesn't take away some of the magic, but you can see how the water behind the log is more choppy--that is because it is taken from a different exposure than the foreground.

I'm enjoying my DP1x, although I'm torn on whether to pack my GF1 instead sometimes. At some point, I'll set the two up next to each other and really compare the results.

Thank you, ggibson. It doesn't take away from the magic too much, but it does make me realize that often there is more to what creates an image than one might think. I stand by my initial remarks, however.(y)

As one who has recently acquired a DP2s, I'd be interested to know how you postprocess - I see from the EXIF you use SPP; at the moment I import RAW images to LR and process some in LR and some in SPP5.1 - neither seems to produce a consistent enough result for me (plus I find SPP horrible to use) ... but maybe that's a subject for a new thread rather than interrupting the image thread?
