Fuji Fuji X-Pro 1 hands on and samples

phew! Close call Duane. You are certainly making the most of the GXR. It may turn out to be the best for a small camera with APS sensor that uses Leica glass without cumbersome adapters. We look forward to seeing what you do with the 40mm. You may want to start a new thread with that combination. I for one would love to see your results.

Its really bad when after you're married for as long as we have and my wife has said "no more" and then that new lens you've been lusting over shows up unexpectedly (aka Leica 40mm). Well, let's just say the suitcase came out and I don't need to say anymore. ...... Fortunately I was given that one last chance.

I consider myself more than lucky that after 33 years of marriage, my wife knowing how obsessive I am with my assorted interests, does not really care what I buy as long as we can still pay our bills and have money in the bank. At the same time I have always told her, if we can afford it, she can buy whatever she wants, she just is nowhere near the shopper I am. Funny thing is after all these years, other than the cars, cameras and the house, almost everything else I buy these days seems to be at least holding it's own, if not increasing in value.

Show her how the value of the Leica 40 mm increased over the last 10 years. She might like it.;)

Thanks everyone for the congratulations and good wishes. It really means a lot coming from y'all. I may have never personally met any of y'all, but in many ways, I do feel like I know many of you. Apologies for the brief hijack of the thread. For whatever it's worth, I did take the XPro1 with me on the engagement day!

That describes my wife and I also, almost perfectly. Except we're only about 26 years in. I have to almost encourage her to spend a little bit frivolously on herself. I used to spend money on bikes, now mostly on camera gear - other than one hobby at a time, I don't spend a lot of money. Bikes were more expensive than the camera stuff I buy, but there was a whole lot less year by year improvement in bike tech - I spent several years really figuring out and honing in on what I liked, and then after that it was mostly just down to maintenance items like tires and chains, which it remains today. Cameras are changing and improving so quickly that I'm apt to be spending money for longer before the technology settles down a bit.

OTOH, it helps that her father was a race car hobbiest (big in the SCCA) - nothing I'll ever spend could come close to that and the whole family's lifestyle and finances WAS affected by that, so my hobbies are relatively small potatoes in comparison. plus, I actually produce something she enjoys with my cameras, unlike with bikes or race cars, which I think was mostly viewed as worryingly risky behavior. I still ride, but I used to ride a LOT and I'm sure was at more risk than I am now, based on frequency alone.

Two rather dismal attempts at converting to B/W from late yesterday...... I'd say I should stick to color but it doesn't seem to be any better that way either. Still a really great camera though. I should probably donate it to someone who can actually use it......

They actually look pretty good to me! Nice details!

Yes you did, and that is what got you in such an awkward spot!:D

LOL! You are absolutely right!

Here's one of the photos with the XPro1 from the engagement day with the 35mm, ISO1000, f1.4.

The XPro1 served admirably for the most part. The chatter didn't bother me very much when outdoors as the background noise helped to drown out the chatter. Only had trouble locking focus a couple of times. I switched to C-AF, and the AF locked on. The 35mm lens is quite a gem, and in spite of the chatter, totally worth the money! I've said this before already, but here it goes again -- the 35mm is very sharp even at f1.4 and produces wonderful out of focus renderings! Definitely a must have lens for a XPro1 user.

I'm glad that she didn't notice that I had two "black" Fuji cameras out at the same time (as seen in this photo with the X10 sitting on the dining table).

Fine dining on a great Easter Weekend! by Armanius, on Flickr

When Amazon first put the pre-orders up on Jan. 8, they had the lens listed for $499, $499, and $599 (18-35-60). By the time I put all the lenses in the cart they had already pulled them and the body. I hit checkout real fast without the body. I kept thinking they would cancel but they didn't. So my body went under a separate order later in Jan. They must have gotten the price wrong.

Super awesome! Great savings. Makes the lens even more worthwhile!

I ordered my lenses at the same time, I too thought they might cancel because of the price so I ordered a second set a month later as a backup, I thought is was funny that Amazon was going to take two days longer to ship the cheaper set that was ordered a month earlier. I choose to wait the two days and cancel my back up set, that is why I got my bodies days before the lenses.

I just came accross a tweet from the @fujiguys, posted a few minutes ago. It says:

"There is too much chatter on twitter about the #FUJIFILM X-Pro1. I gonna try to reduce that soon."

This doesn't really make sense, so I guess it's a sort of riddle on the word "chatter", referring to the aperture blades chatter that annoys some people. Maybe a firmware update soon?

If they fix it I'll probably wish I could have heard it in the first place. I can hear the AF motors working, but I have yet to hear the blades chatter. Never heard the famed rattlesnake with the Panasonic 25mm either. And when I tried an EM5 in the store the other day, I couldn't hear the "hum" until I literally held the camera up to my ear and I could hear it very faintly, but even at the distance of using the EVF I couldn't. I think I'm just a bit hard of hearing and never realized it, because I know these things are real and loud enough to bother some people. But I just cannot hear them. Finally, an upside to listening to all of that loud music in my youth! (Not that the music wasn't its own upside!)

That would be nice if Fuji can reduce the chatter. If not, it's still a camera that produces some wonderful high quality images.

Took some shots with a brand new 1.8/75mm Heliar today. Focussing is easy with the magnifier (and even with just the EVF display), as long as you can do it with open aperture. However, Fuji should implement 1 or 2 more zoom steps for the magnifier, with the current setting serving as maximum zoom. Even more so, the magnifier tool needs to be available anytime. Currently, you can't engage it as long as the camera is saving any images to the SD card. Yes, really! Plus, still no OVF picture frame lines for custom lens settings #5 and #6. And no OVF at all with lenses longer than 60 mm. Obviously, all this can (and has to) be corrected with firmware updates.

As for the Heliar, it's a nice lens, not very expensive (I paid less than Fuji's official price for the 2.4/60 mm) and well-built, typical Carl Zeiss Japan feel. Which is no surprise, as it's coming from the same factory. That said, it's a little soft at open aperture, plus there are some CAs. I'm pretty sure you can spot them when looking at the samples in "original size", as I didn't correct them. These are all OOC JPEGs (using the internal RAW converter), mostly Pro Neg. Std., Provia and a few Astia shots, with some of my custom curves applied in Aperture.
