    Wonderful non-tutorials to Darktable

Since I jump around between RAW developer software, I prefer an external DAM software (didn't actually have one until recently. Bought imatch over Christmas.) Will give Darktable a try - thanks for the links to these videos!

Rant: I think I’m done with USPS for a while

On another note - I don't envy any postal worker/delivery person for their job... Not before the pandemic - and especially not in the last year... They were already taxed by the volume of deliveries before this year... then the pandemic multiplied their challenges and the volume of parcels...

Rant: I think I’m done with USPS for a while

Look for online-reviews (google/yelp/trustpilot/...) of any shipping company and you'll only find horror stories for all of them, and 2 out of 5 stars at best :) I've used USPS to ship many items from the US to Canada, and they've always been a cheap and reliable option. Yes, UPS and FedEx...

SOLVED: current problem with Capture 1 v20 and Bitdefender on Win

Is anyone else who's running Capture 1 v20 on Windows (and Bitdefender) currently experiencing the situation that Bitdefender flagged a C1 dll as infected (&put it into quarantine) and now C1 isn't running anymore? ("Fatal Error ImgCoreDll.dll can't start the crash handler. Try restarting... " )

    The Christmas 2020 Thread

That's one of the two things I wonder about with these extremely elaborate decorations - electricity (todays LED lights might help there) and where do they store it throughout the year? :) Maybe I should just ask the owner about storage. He's often out there in the garden, chatting with...

    The Christmas 2020 Thread

this is going to be a longer post :-D This year the Holiday decorations are a welcome attraction to us - since our walks have been constrained to our neighbourhood for a long time now... I hope people leave those up into January/February... Really helps to "light up" the dull weather and...

Christmas came early for Star Wars fans

Haha, I thought he had to remove the jetpack as part of the resolution of the initial confrontation with 'that other guy'... (Now why he didn't put it back on again is another question :-) )

Christmas came early for Star Wars fans

Hahaha, couldn't agree more on the names :) (and the languages in general - especially compared against Tolkien). Not taking itself too seriously is a huge part why 'The Mandalorian' works for me (eg vs the recent movies). And as for the visual effects - I'm proud to have worked on the most...

Christmas came early for Star Wars fans

I think they did a great job with 'The Mandalorian' - taking the look and feel of the originals and refreshing it for today... For the first time in a loong time, a Star Wars themed thing made me feel like a kid again (rather than watching something 'made for kids'). It's also more of a...

    Capture One 21 released today

They do a lot of discounts for new users - and the cheap camera-manufacturer-version upgrade paths... But once you're IN, those saving opportunities go away... With THOSE upgrade prices the discounts become a lot more important... But now they started that "we won't tell you what's going to...

  17. Tilman Paulin

    Capture One 21 released today

Exactly, the discounts this year and last year are specifically pre-release of the update (and end when the new version is released - so no way of doing a trial before you buy.) They don't even tell you about any new features! You CAN join their beta tester program and "trial" that way (which I...

    Software Opinions on Luminar 4?

The following is not about Luminar 4, but a small rant about the company. Sorry if slightly OT :) I actually forgot how dodgy their business model is until I looked into this again just now... They basically release unfinished software with big promises and roadmaps... But then they don't...

    Software Opinions on Luminar 4?

And as far as I understand there's no update to it as the company replaces the "4" product with a "Luminar AI" product (as they previously replaced "2018" with "3" or something along those lines) I had high hopes initially, since it's apparently made by programmers who originally worked on the...

    Capture One 21 released today

It's great software, when you want good control over color, and I like it a lot... But I'll sit this update out :) Not enough in there for me to make it worth their steep upgrade prices... The addition of a "black-shadow-highlight-white" control in v20 was a crucial addition for me in order to...

    DPR’s Best Camera under $2000 costs $2499

I was looking at it from a marketing perspective (since these websites more often than not are marketing tools). The promise of "with this lens you also can take photos as good as these" could be more successful than a bunch of numbers... But then again, numbers and benchmarks are successful...

    DPR’s Best Camera under $2000 costs $2499

I had a quick look at their first review (Canon 800mm) and I have to agree - their photos are great! Dpreview definitely is far below that level (and their "developed to taste from raw" conversions are usually pretty bad) which is odd, since you'd want people to see great photos and make...

    DPR’s Best Camera under $2000 costs $2499

They must have had a particularly "off" week :-) They not only changed the "sub2000$" headline - they also in the meantime changed "A7S2 vs A7s3 - which one is better?" to "A7s3 - what's new and why it matters"... That aside - I think they're mostly resting on the laurels of dpreviews...

    600, 1200mm comparison -- Rx10, Oly M1

I think one aspect that shows here is one of the 75-300mm's main weaknesses - flare/glare when shooting against a bright background... I love that lens, but that's a situation it is really bad at...

    DPR’s Best Camera under $2000 costs $2499

    DPR’s Best Camera under $2000 costs $2499

I think they're probably just less organized/methodical than dpreview back in the olden days was. (read: they now just publish content for contents sake)... Another article that made me raise an eyebrow this morning: "Is the new Sony A7S3 better than the five year old A7S2?" Answer: yes - in...

How much of the current market for cameras is enthusiat/Pro?

Agreed, that's why I used the hypothetical 'would'. The 'mass market' as it was will never be again. IF they'd try to regain some of that, they'd have to try for a highly refined product at a lower price, that offers advantages that a camera can't match... And even if they pulled that off -...

How much of the current market for cameras is enthusiat/Pro?

Well, the mass market / high volume market would be to try to cater to the cell phone users... "Sample cameras for enthusiasts" (entry level cameras) will be a much, much smaller market... But probably one that is more certain...

How much of the current market for cameras is enthusiat/Pro?

I'd guess manufacturers would have to come up with a radically different approach for the "entry level" market (even that term is basically outdated) Cameras that nail basic settings as good as smartphones do (white-balance, exposure,...) without need (or even options) for tweaking settings...

Yes, it's the lens that stopped me from buying an Oly 12-100 - or any Panasonic body (well, all my four thirds lenses contributed to that). Even though I mostly focus manually I still want a somewhat workable autofocus :) The Oly 12-100 has some advantages (weather sealed, faster, you can buy it...

Advice Wanted Uh-oh, I'm at it again . . . wanted: your recommendation for a camera for "harm's way"

For just one or two photos every once in a while, I'd "use" a second person with umbrella (if available/willing ;) ) If it's going to be more photos (but still just occasionally) I'd try and see if a raincover is a workable solution (they're a bit of a hassle in use - so might not be ideal...

Advice Wanted Uh-oh, I'm at it again . . . wanted: your recommendation for a camera for "harm's way"

Other than a used Panasonic 100-300mm ("Splash and Dustproof Construction") and a used WR m43 body I can't think of any alternative to your RX10 mk4 that wouldn't be even more expensive... But the RX10 should be the camera for the job... maybe an added raincover for peace of mind might be the...

Micro 4/3 Despite lust towards FF and DSLR dinosaurs, I'm just drifting towards m4/3...

Isn't the GH5s basically that? Had it had IBIS I would have been interested in it... (Bit of a high price though... but I guess the "economy of scale" already didn't work for the regular m43 sensors - much less so for a specialized sub-set... :( )

    Critique Wanted Which lens?

I remember some advice for using ultra-wide angles which probably applies to fisheye lenses too. If you keep them perfectly level you get no "falling lines"/keystoning (or obvious fisheye distortions). Probably helps to have the horizon in mid-frame too... Once you angle them up or down, the...

    Zeiss ZX1

Jokes aside (and we all can use a few chuckles these days) - you have to give Zeiss credit for trying to think& develop outside of the box... They're trying something new (rather than just sticking a wood grip on a Sony). Is the concept successful from my point of view? No. Do I wish them...
