Bridges of the New River Gorge

Rickety swinging bridge over Glade Creek in Babcock State Park. It is a wild ride that only gets wilder as it plunges into the gorge, and people actually kayak this! The second image was looking upstream from the bridge.

Seen while strolling...walking and wandering outside

I guess this isn't surprising, considering the trail I was on followed the path of a narrow gauge railway that was abandoned in 1956.

    Project Beastie Bike

Brand new route for me today. Nine miles, and much of the trails were not very bike friendly, at least for an old fart like me. Lots of recent rain made much of them soggy and hard to get any sort of momentum. Then there were the trail segments that followed cliff lines with a drop of hundreds...

Waterfalls of the New River Gorge (photo heavy)

A few from a 9 mile trek through Babcock State Park today. There was some serious whitewater on Glade and Mann's Creeks, but their gorges are so steep and deep and the foliage thick, so distant glimpses through the trees were all that were possible.

Indeed. We have one parked on the tarmac that landed there and maintenance issues kept it from departing.

I somehow missed this when you originally posted it. About a third of our facility were not even born when I began working there. At 60, I'm the oldest by a minimum of 4 years.

DxO Nik Collection 2 rumoured soon.

I'm still using the free version, and it works great for me. I even run it under Linux. (I'm not a hipster or a tech wizz - I just like free stuff!)

    Coming full circle

My sincerest hope for a full recovery, Sue. I know someone over here who dealt with pulmonary hypertension. It took many attempts to find the right remedy, but he has been back to nearly full function for several years. He has to carry around a small leather satchel with his medication pump, but...

The band saw in the pic above has been very handy of late. Among other things, I cut out the contraption in the next image in just a few minutes. It's a body mold for a tenor ukulele. The pics show it being used to hold everything in alignment while the tentalones are being installed, then in...

    Coming full circle

Yep. I've rotated through various camera systems numerous times over the past 10 years. I sort of envy those who buy something and just use it faithfully for years. For a long time I let myself fall into a "grass is greener" mentality, but my most recent swap back to Fuji is my last. I'm very...

Fuji Showcase Fujifilm XF 55-200 f/3.5-4.8 OIS LM

This lens is the reason I bought back into the Fuji universe. I was satisfied with the IQ I was getting from my Panasonic G80, but I wanted a better mid-range telephoto lens than the Olympus 75-300 II, and the PL 50-200 was much more than I'm willing to pay for a lens. My research into...

Indeed it is. I've missed some really good compositions because I've dawdled, but I've also watched a sky turn from rolling grey clouds to crimson and blazing orange in a very short time.

This image is pretty good, but the sky on the drive to work this morning was a dazzling display of pink and magenta. That had faded by the time I parked and made it to my vantage point.

Yesterday when I went to our back yard to do some yard work, I was greeted by a particularly vocal Carolina Wren. It actually followed me around at the storage shed, dropping down to a branch right above my head, jabbering away. Today, I had a pair of Wrens giving me an earful near the building...

Seen while strolling...walking and wandering outside

These are Red Efts, the larval stage of the Red Spotted Newt. The adults are aquatic, but the juveniles are terrestrial until they reach maturity. As an adult, the spots will remain but the bodies will be olive brown. I have found the adult in the wild, but these are the first two juveniles I...

Wildflowers are blooming in abundance along WV's New River. Trout Lilly on the left and Wild Ginger on the right. The Ginger has a single basal flower between the leaf pairs that grows from a stalk right at ground level: Great Trillium, known to some as "Stinking Benjamin" due to the not so...

My latest acquisition arrived yesterday, a bandsaw for my Shopsmith. My old freestanding unit is broken, and the part I need is on nationwide backorder until at least mid-May. In the meantime, I've been unable to proceed on several projects. I've been interested in the Shopsmith bandsaw for a...
