Sorry to hear of your troubles, Bill. I can't imagine how difficult it must be.

    Published

A photo I took a couple of winters ago has been published in the UK's "Landscape Photography Magazine". I had forgotten about submitting the photo, and it has been a while. I haven't owned that camera or lens since some time in 2017. I had to submit a mug shot with the image, as you can see from...

    Dutch isn't that hard.

I can probably speak 5 languages. Hmmm, there's English . . . I took 5 years of Francais and can remember such important things as "My name is Tony" and "Where is the Loo?"; I can count to 5 in Spanish; I know about 3 curse words in German; and I even know a few Russian words. So yep, there's 5...

Local grocery store now has robots patrolling the aisles

My take is that Skynet has decided that being sinister and vicious didn't work in its many attempts, so innocuous is its new plan to subjugate society. We humans are prone to ignore the harmless and banal, so the strategy just might work.

    My new-ish blog

I need to do a better job of keeping track of stuff; didn't realize it had been 6 weeks since my last post: Babcock in the Spring - Creation's Glory Photography

Yeah, aside from a slight shift in color balance, the two sets are pretty similar to my eyes.

    I'm Back

I remember you Steve. Welcome back. I'm one state over in WV. I'm a woodworker myself. Hopefully you'll be able to use that E-M5 to share some pics of your projects.

    Hows weather at your place?

Similar weather pattern in the western foothills of the Appalachians. Cold at night, 50-60 during the day. It was sunny and 29F when I started my hike today. By mid afternoon, long sleeves were enough to go outside, but there was still a bit of bite to the air.

    Major Chemical Fire

Saw the footage on the news this evening. Back when I was a kid and my dad was a chemical plant operator, the county where our state capital is located was called the Chemical Valley. We had dozens of chemical plants, jobs were plentiful - and our air and streams were majorly polluted. The...

How to Shoot with an Old Camera

Interesting, and a bit sobering. I remember seeing images of a 2x4 that had impaled a tree and stayed there; some for a drinking straw! Wind can be devastating.

"... so it's just normal for my age?"

I don't feel so old now after reading the above replies. Not bad for a Monday.

"... so it's just normal for my age?"

Welcome to Old Age. I'm about 11 years older than you, and while I try to keep myself reasonably active with hiking and biking all year round, my body is constantly reminding me I'm not 20 any more. My distance vision is fine, but my near vision is not so good. And I've gotten to the point where...

    My new-ish blog

Earlier this year I started a Wordpress photo blog. Nothing fancy, just some posts sharing images and talking about some of my travels. Here's the latest: www.creationsgloryphotography.com/glade-creek From there you can follow links to the earlier posts. Suggestions and critique are welcome.

    Model / Hobby Trains?

I have in storage a train set an uncle gave me better than 55 years ago. I doubt it is serviceable, and I've carried it from move to move, but haven't the heart to dispose of it. I need to pull it out and see if there's any hope.

    Contemplating my future

Thanks guys. I've been kind of over it for a while, mainly just taking it day by day and waiting it out. Our finances never really took a hit, as I'd anticipated this happening and had tried to prepare us for it. I'm just rather jaded and cynical with the whole US political process, though. We...

    Hows weather at your place?

I was just watching the news, and the weather guy said within a few days we should expect the coldest weather of the year, possibly sub-zero. And on it goes.

    Hows weather at your place?

We have rebounded to Spring-like temps; mid 40s yesterday, 50s today. Supposed to get slammed again later this week. Typical Winter weather patterns for us.

Sounds pretty similar to us down here in the mid Appalachians. I'm planning to bundle up and go out waterfall hunting tomorrow morning.

    Hows weather at your place?

Cold, windy, just enough snow to create havoc on the roads, and about to get a whole lot colder tonight. I'd still go out for the eclipse, except we are at 100% obscuration. It seems like every time there is an interesting astronomical event, we are clouded over. :(

What books are you reading for pleasure these days?

WordPress for Beginners 2018. Although I have an IT-related degree, I haven't kept up with advances in tech as well as I could have through the years.

    Hows weather at your place?

Surprisingly, we don't usually get a lot of snow here in the western part of WV, typically about 24" a year. An hour or so east is a different story . . . they often get hammered.

    Hows weather at your place?

What Andrew said. I'm about 3 hours south of him, and we've had the usual mixed bag of very warm (for January), cold, windy, sunny, murky, rainy . . . . sometimes in the same day, it seems. Supposed to be down in the single digits by Sunday.

    Nature Photographer

    Contemplating my future

Thanks for the detailed reply, Tilman. I do agree with your "exit plan" statement. I've been discussing that very thing with my wife. Other government shutdowns had no effect on us, as they were brief. I expect this one to be very prolonged. I don't want to say why, because it delves into...

    Contemplating my future

To be honest, for some time I've felt like I have been stuck in a rut, which is one reason I've spent so much time getting out and traveling around our state with my bicycle. A 2-3 hour drive and 8-10 mile hike or 15-20 mile bike ride plus return trip makes for a long day, but it also means I've...

    Contemplating my future

Thanks Dave. I have unfortunately read accounts of how it has already hit some families rather harshly; home loans lost or closings cancelled because certain agencies are shuttered, for instance. Regardless of what boasts the POTUS makes, this country and the many families affected will be...

    Contemplating my future

Thanks for the further replies. I like Steve's "I really want to retire moving toward something and not away from something but I haven’t thought of anything yet." And Luke, I am ready for a career change. Just need to find the right path. Unfortunately, living between two small cities where the...

    Contemplating my future

Thanks again for all of the replies. There truly have been a lot of unhelpful comments from both sides over the past weeks. I'm truly hoping the comments today of keeping the government closed for months or even years was to rally his base. One never knows. We took some precautions figuring this...

    Contemplating my future

Thanks for all the replies. I know my wife is nervous about me retiring so soon. A family member has strongly urged against it based on their own experience. I just know the status quo is not suffient for me. Andrew's final paragraph sums up my thoughts fairly well.

    Contemplating my future

I am one of the 800,000+ Federal employees not being paid during the partial US government shutdown. I’ve served 31+ years in the field of aviation safety, and I’ve long been ready for a new chapter in my life. The current political drama is the last straw. Our POTUS today threatened to keep us...

Finally got my lenses in order

That's about 23 more lenses than I have, and only 2 of mine get regular or semi-regular use. Still doesn't stop GAS and its insidious little brother lens lust from trying to elbow their way in.

    How's weather?

No last leaf here. I have a giant twin Oak in back and a Pear tree in front just waiting to dump their leaves as soon as I clean up the trillions of leaves already dropped by the Maple and Sweetgum trees in the front yard. I love Autumn, but I pay for it dearly every November & December.

Going Old School - Purposefully Working In Manual Focus Lenses (Image Heavy)

Nice images, Andrew. For a long time after I picked up my first digital ILC, legacy lenses were all I used. Got a lot of great images, and I do like the old school rendering of the old lenses. I still have a few I keep on the shelf mainly for display, but pull them out from time to time just for...

    My kit is so close.

Although I'm not in the Fuji camp any more, I'm very pleased with my walk-around combo, a Panasonic G80 and a Panasonic-Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4. IQ is excellent, as is the build quality, and I like the feel and balance a lot. I've spent a lot of money over the years buying and selling gear to try...
