How to Turn $10000 into Gas

I still have an A7, now serving in my table-top studio. If you can live without image stabilization and don't care about fast AF, it's a really fine camera with excellent output.

I longed for the simpler times, now I long for the affordable days...

Long, long time ago I had my first serious SLR system, Minolta XD7's and 1.7/50, 2.8/28 and 2.5/100. I quickly discovered that lens changing is something you need to practice. So I did, until I got to the point that I could do it while walking. I still change lenses the way I always did, but now...

New enemy of photographers? "Flat Earthers"

Another reason why I don't like Facebook, even if I have an account for it; I only use Facebook to communicate with others in a few closed groups.

Fuji Is it me or the cameras?

@Adam Bonn wrote in his blog about differences between X-Pro1 and X-Pro2, mainly concentrated on tonal range and colour IIRC. Maybe there's a clue somewhere in his write-ups.

Leica New Leica M-E (Typ 240)

In my opinion "character" is often a euphemism for defects, that support the intentions of the photographer. Example: the Zeiss Loxia 35mm wide-open has spherical aberration, which I used to my advantage in one particular situation. "Character" is often more related to properties of the lens...

Leica New Leica M-E (Typ 240)

Already calibrated myself for his non-rational enthousiasm :). As to your comments: Because you gotta focus in the middle, the subject you're shooting at might realise it way easier than if you shot a wide angle lens just by placing your AF point on the edge. Oh my, that's a very good point. I...

Leica New Leica M-E (Typ 240)

Don't want to go back to anything smaller than FF, and the lack of high ISO performance puts me off too much.

Leica New Leica M-E (Typ 240)

That's my thought really, if it weren't for the high cost involved. I seriously investigated if I could rent one or borrow for some days; I found an opportunity for a workshop where I could borrow a Leica M for a day, maybe I'll do that.

Leica New Leica M-E (Typ 240)

Thorsten von Overgaard, a self-declared Leica-freak, wrote an article on focusing with a rangefinder as part of a series on the Leica M 240. I'm continuously agonizing over getting me a Leica M, mainly because I like the small lenses and because I remember how it felt to use my father's Contax...

    Dogs (part II)

My mother taught her dogs to not fixate her with their looks when she was eating a cookie: "Don't look at me all the time!" And the dogs would look away. Most peculiar sight.

    Unread number ignores ignored threads

Looks like this. I supposedly have two unread posts according to the red number 2 behind "What's new" and the list is empty. Most probably due to some unread posts in the cameraderiebot threads, which I have set to be ignored. Would be nice if the number of unread posts excludes the ignored...

Just for fun - You Get To Decide What I Take On Vacation!

Interestingly, more than half of the pictures with the 55-200mm were made at the extreme of 200mm :) I have sort of the same experience with my 70-200mm for Sony FF.

    The Decisive Moment (the book)

I spent the money to actually buy that book. It's a lot cheaper than each of the lenses I have :). Good pictures indeed make you forget about technique, they just grab you and the book is full of them. It's comforting to know that we're vastly better equipped than HCB in his time, and...

GAS: Please Share your Latest Acquisitions Big and Small

I know. It appeared amazingly difficult to find a wide, comfortable neck strap without screaming brand names. Comfortable for me means leather or cotton around my neck. Only other thing I found was a cotton neck strap, unfortunately in the colours of the Dutch flag, which would draw way too much...

GAS: Please Share your Latest Acquisitions Big and Small

After having put up with various neckstraps I decided I wanted something comfortable and inconspicuous. I researched every neck strap available in two large camera stores and finally found something I like, only available directly from the manufacturer in Germany. No big blazing product names...

    SiJy 2019 Discussion

First time I entered a Single In challenge and I must say it has been an enlightening experience. Lots of fun too to see what my fellows-in-the-same-boat have been doing, saying and showing. I easily withstood the temptation to go for tractors :). Also as a member of my photoclub I hardly ever...

GAS: Please Share your Latest Acquisitions Big and Small

I'm always happy to spend too much money on overpriced stuff; watch this space for an example soon to be made public. But I'm still a little bit hesitant here, mainly because I can't for the life of me determine what this thing is. :confused-95:

Correcting horizons: is less rotation always better?

Not a problem for me because I don't have a Leica. Still don't know if that should make me sad or happy. :confused-95: But I have to agree, testing a Leica lens on a Sony FF camera doesn't make much sense for people who want to know how an M-mount lens will perform on a Leica. Especially...

Correcting horizons: is less rotation always better?

I had a subscription to the Mirrorless section on diglloyd.com of Lloyd Chambers, one of the most avid pixel-peepers I have ever seen. He showed the degradation in resolution of photos by applying correction for geometrical distortion; I guess it's the same kind of degradation you get when...

    Went to the zoo yesterday.

I've had an absurd amount of gear for essentially making family pictures (think 3 x Nikon F3 with 2 motordrives and 20 Nikkor lenses), and I never regretted it. We have about 1 m of photo albums covering 20 years of our family life and I thank myself for having the cameras ready and dragging...

    Sony Sony A7R IV

According to DxOMark the difference is somewhat less than 1 stop. Which is significant but not a huge difference IMHO. I happen to have both cameras and I noticed that difference but I wouldn't upgrade for it; that said, I think the A7R2 has a lot going for it compared to the A7.
