    Trip to Japan

Akihabara. I caught the train there one morning, stepped out of the train station and on to the street, and was promptly overwhelmed by the lights, sounds, and colours, and all the young hip people who know what they're doing and where they're going. I wanted to check out the scene but was...

    Trip to Japan

A shot of Matsumoto Castle: And a throwaway shot the castle from the inside. There was a long line of visitors wanting to come see: One thing that surprised and impressed me in Japan was the groups of young people who visited these preserved historical sites and their museums. They were...

    Trip to Japan

I took this shot out from the top floor of Matsumoto Castle, a very well preserved and protected Edo period castle. A view over Matsumoto city. The information plaques said that the shogun would use the top floor to plan their war games, strategise with his samurai generals. I can only...

    Trip to Japan

Narai Juku, a fantastically preserved Edo period town with some minor upgrades, ie. a train service). It apparently only snows there roughly once every 5 years and that's what exactly happened when I went there in 2018. It was gobsmackingly beautiful. This is my wife holding our baby at the...

    Trip to Japan

The in-laws took me on a day out to a place called Kamakura where there were many beautiful shrines and temples on hills and mountains. This is my brother-in-law walking past some monks. The same photo but with all the colours.

This photo is upside down. And it's a reflection off the surface of a pond at a shrine. The two guys look like they're looking down at me, but they're actually looking at the koi in the pond.

    Trip to Japan

Space is a premium in Tokyo, so while walking through the compact streets I'd sometimes stumble on a suburban cemetery hidden away amongst the tightly packed houses.

    Trip to Japan

I'd go walking around the back alleys and seldom caught public transport, even if it meant walking 2 hours to get home. Two reasons - because I really wanted to see Japan on my feet and thoroughly enjoyed walking through the streets. And secondly, I got lost in the underground maze at Shinjuku...

    Trip to Japan

I ditched Lightroom and this is my first attempt in Capture One. I see there's a ton of banding in the sunrise photo above, is anyone here experienced in both LR and C1 whom I can ask questions? I've just spent all afternoon and evening searching google and youtube on how to do the most basic...

    Trip to Japan

I was overwhelmed during my first trip there too in 2018. I was in a daze the whole month I was there. It didn't help that I was overdosing on anti-airsick medication during the first 24 hours which made me tired and drowsy but it was amazing nonetheless. Re camera gear - in this second trip...

    Cliff climbing.

I really only change away from my 50mm lens because I'm forced to, ie. when we're in a tight space and I can't back up any further. Other than that, I'm still very happy with my 50mm.

    Trip to Japan

My in-laws have an apartment in Tokyo, but they also have a house in Nagano. We arrived in Nagano late in the evening and the first thing I did was go out for a walk in the snow through the streets of their neighbourhood. The next morning, I went out again into the snow to have a look...

    Trip to Japan

Hey Shimokitazawa! That's very close to Setagaya where my in-laws live. I have indeed been there and enjoyed seeing the shops. I spent quite a considerable amount of time in a couple of the used goods stores there, particularly in the camera sections.

    Trip to Japan

My wife my was very surprised that I was willing to try as much sashimi and other "exotic" dishes as I did. I surprised myself a bit too. I think it's because in Australia I really don't want any but when I was in Japan, it looked so fresh and was presented so well I was happy to try some and...

Saw some guys rockclimbing yesterday when I went for a hike up a mountain. I yelled across the crevasse whether I could take photos of the guy sitting on the cliff edge. The guy yelled back "YEAH THAT'S FINE." So I took some shots and then I yelled: "YOU WANT ME TO EMAIL YOU THE PHOTOS?" He...

    Trip to Japan

The second thing I saw on my first day in Tokyo were these space-saving car parks. I've never seen anything like this, certainly not in Australia. The part that really amazed me was that some of these elevator car parks looked old and rickety, they'd been around for decades in Japan so it's...

    Trip to Japan

In response to Briar's response about my bravery, I say this: "It is better to have thrown up, than not thrown up at all". There were all kinds of folding bikes there I'd never seen before but by far the one bike I kept seeing all over Tokyo and elsewhere in Japan was that yellow Hummer. I...

    Trip to Japan

One of the first things I noticed was that the Japanese people well and truly embrace the bicycle, which I thought was awesome. There were bikes everywhere, some were very expensive bikes too, and they didn't have to be properly secured or locked up. Theft didn't seem to be a thing.
