Single In Single in April (SiA) 2024 - day 30

Here's a cookie jar that I remember from my childhood. As far back into the early 1960's as I can remember it sat on top of the refrigerator. It's still on my mother's refrigerator today. Lit with the now traditional clamshell beauty lighting and shot in the oh so popular wide open as shallow as...

I went old school on this one. I used a +3 achromat to get close enough. Window light. Square frame in camera.* Fuji Acros w/green filter film sim. Just resized with no edits. ISO 3200, 1/25 s, f/2.8

Photo of a photographer taking a photo

Back in 2011 in the old days of the u4/3 forum we had a meet up in Boston. Someone arranged a guide to take us on a photo tour. She wore a hat.

    Square format images

Brian, when I click on your images they resize to fit in the window. Not all posted images do this. I don't know why, but you're doing something right!

I’m glad you enjoyed it. It certainly wasn’t intentional. I can’t even find the robot face.

Panasonic Anyone have any experience with the Panasonic DMC L1 Four Thirds camera?

The L-1, like the E-330, has a live view option on the rear screen. Only the B mode, it doesn't have the E-330's A mode. AND you get the feeling of knowing that it's exactly the same camera as the Leica Digilux 3 with Lumix written in place of the Leica badge ;)

Single In Single in April (SiA) 2024 - day 15

I've been making pretty contrasty photos on a black background so I wanted to change it up so I decided to go for a high key look. The lens I'm using for this challenge is the Minolta 58mm f/1.4 designed in the early 1960's. I got it because it's an interesting focal length on the GFX system and...

Joe's Blues form the 1970 album Intercontinental. Joe Pass is one of my favorite guitarists.

Single In Single in April (SiA) 2024 - day 10

I was looking at the work of Anton Corbin today so I tried this. I used Fuji's Acros film sim and did a few adjustments for contrast on the jpeg. Corbin usually used available light but I resorted to two strobes.

Sony Sony A7 IV, Sigma 40mm or 50mm?

I would choose the 50mm for potentially less geometric distortion. Unless the 40 has a significantly flatter field. For other general purpose uses, I'd prefer the 40mm. Although I'd rather use something around 100mm for this type of copy work. Or an adapted enlarger lens. Not very helpful I guess.

I was looking at the work of Martin Schoeller and thought I'd try to emulate his work. No matter how much I try copy other people's style it always ends up looking like mine.

I don’t know the process but you can make a profile from a jpeg and use that in Lightroom as your conversion profile.

Single In Single in April (SiA) 2024 - day 1

Sitting behind my other passion. I'm starting out with the idea of shooting square jpegs. I've been curious about composing in a square frame so why not informally add it to the challenge. Let's see how long that lasts.

Single In Single in April (SiA) 2024 - announcement

I don't know how I completely missed this thread until tonight. I love doing these challenges. I'm in. I'll be using the Fuji GFX50R with a newly acquired Minolta 58mm f1.4. I've been a little slow getting to know this lens so this is a perfect opportunity. The reason I've been slow is I liked...

    Producing Moire

I'm not sure what's going on in that how-to article. I just did a quick search to find it. Your original has a strong pattern so I think you can create the effect just by overlaying slightly a different copy. Since the moire is created by the interference created by overlapping patterns I would...

    Advice Wanted GX8?

Andrew, Miguel, Thank you both for your thoughts. I've used Panasonic before. My first u4/3 body was the G2. It's my all time favorite body and the menu system made more sense than Olympus. I gave up IBIS to switch to u4/3 because Olympus didn't have a body with a viewfinder. Well, not without...

    Advice Wanted GX8?

I've been thinking it's time to upgrade from my Olympus E-M1. I haven't really been paying attention to newer releases or what features come with them. I've been mainly focused on the Olympus E-M1mk2 and the Panasonic G9. They have the capabilities that I want and the current prices are nice. I...

    Sharpness isn't Everything (Open Thread)

Here's an old favorite. I think I may have posted it in one of the musical performance threads. Sometimes you just have to work with what you got. In this case an old camera with limited high ISO capabilities.

    Micro 4/3 OM-1 Mk2

I’m cheap too. While I don’t think the price is out of line with other choices on the market it’s still more than I’m willing to spend. I’m starting to look around for a good price on an E-M1ii or G9.

    Micro 4/3 OM-1 Mk2

Yes, even the GH6 is less. But, for the way I shoot, the Olympus kit is much smaller, much lighter and has better (as in more) depth of field at the same apertures. Or the OM system need less light at the same aperture so my lights can be smaller, lighter and less expensive. OM kit, all new...

    Micro 4/3 OM-1 Mk2

When I look at the OM1mk2 along with 17/1.8, 45/1.8 and 60/2.8 lenses compared to a Z8 with 35, 85 and a macro lens the OM looks very attractive. There's many advantages beyond the attractive price.
