Buying my way out of a slump

I see it differently. After years of photographing solely with a single prime 50mm lens, I took the plunge and bought that Horizon Perfekt panorama, a film camera no less. I discovered I thoroughly enjoyed it, which led me to purchasing the cheapest fisheye lens to experiment on my usual...

Buying my way out of a slump

If that's what gets you out of your slump and you have the money to indulge in it, by all means do it. Half the fun is putting that shopping list together. Sometimes I 'shop' around on the internet and compile a wishlist of gear just for the hell of it, even though I don't have the money to spend.

    Critique Wanted This or that?

Yes, as long as no flower is half in and half out of the composition. Box it (the composition) in, not partially cut things out. It's different if there were a lot more flowers and you're doing your best to tidy up the composition. In your photos, there is a very finite and controllable...

What went .. normal like every other day.

I woke up, boiled some water and made a pot of tea, like I do on most other days. I didn't spill it or knock the cup over. I also thought about not putting pants on for a change, but felt it would be unusually adventurous of me. So I put some pants on. It would have felt too breezy down...

A short review of what a superzoom can do

Ah I was thinking of the type of astrophotography where you're able to zoom in at a specific star cluster. With a zoom like that, imagine what you can achieve if you were able to hook up the camera to an astronomy telescope.

    The eternal 35-vs-50 war

I'm not sure if I want to. The 40mm feels like a neither-here-nor-there FOV. I'm also using the Leica M so I know it's not going to match up with the frame lines. I'd give it a go if I already had the lens but I'm not sure I want to spend a few hundred bucks to experiment with it. I am so...

    The eternal 35-vs-50 war

I am a 50mm photographer, I struggle with 35mm. Every time I think I'm finally ready for my 35mm lens, I find that I'm still struggling with it because I really don't like my 35mm photos. I WANT to like it but I can't seem to get a hang of it. The weird thing is - I've come to really, really...

    What went wrong today ...

I have a story that involved bad luck, and then more bad luck, and then the luck got so bad that it managed to turn into good luck that resolved all the accumulated bad luck. It started years ago, I was trying to do a three point turn on a tight suburban road up in the mountains. As I was...

    Trip to Japan

Got this shot through the window as I was racing along in a metro train. I asked my wife what this is, she said it's a place where you pay a fee to get in to go fishing. Urban fishing, I suppose.

    Trip to Japan

I attended the New Years Eve ringing of the bells ceremony in Nagano. The bell is rung 108 times, people show up and the first 108-ish attendees receive a little wooden "ticket" with a number on it. We each get to ring the bell once as per our ticket number. We got there early and I was...

    How about this nutty idea...

Alright, so all this talk about rectilinear, a fisheye can sort of be rectilinear as long as the camera is held horizontal, right? Sort of? I've been using my fisheye a lot in the past couple of weeks and I'm learning a lot about its quirks. Here are two shots, one that another photographer...

    Philosophy The Obsession with "gear"

I love my Leicas. That's good because I generally don't have serious gas for anything else other than if they released another Leica that has better ISO. I'm always hungry for better ISO. For years the only camera I used was my Leica M8.2 and I still love it (albeit it's kind of broken now)...

    Philosophy The Obsession with "gear"

I've never thought about it that way and come to think of it, I think that's probably my underlying reason sometimes for wanting to try a camera.

Would You Like This Wishful Thinking Camera?

With the specs you described, the only thing I'd want is an f/1.4 lens, not f/2. But otherwise, I'd really like it with a panorama sensor, similar to the Xpan. With a wide f/1.4 lens, say 21mm or perhaps even 16mm.

What do you do for a living? AKA, how do you finance your gear? :)

There was, once upon a time, when I spoke three languages when I was a child. That time is long gone now and I totally suck at languages. I really should learn German though, my research project involves Leica.

What do you actually do with the video capabilities of your camera?

I shot a wedding last year with the Leica M10 and M240. At the end of the day when many people had left and the core family group remained, somebody turned up the music and everyone spontaneously got up and danced. It was such a great way to end a wonderful day. I took quite a lot of shots of...

  39. TraamisVOS

    How about this nutty idea...

No rush at all, I'm grateful for your help with this. No need for raw files either, I just want to see what the general "look" is when pairing the fisheye lens with the m43 sensor.
  40. TraamisVOS

    How about this nutty idea...

Any m43 sensor with that lens would be perfect! I just realised what gryphon1911 was talking about - I'm not exactly trying to get a lo-fi look, it's more the wide panorama with the Widelux character that I'm after. I'm not talking about non-sharp blurry-ness or light leaks or typical stuff...
  41. TraamisVOS

    How about this nutty idea...

The difficulty is that the Widelux isn't distorted due to the lens itself, the effect is caused by the swinging lens which creates a very unique look which is not fisheye-like but is the closest thing to a mild fisheye as far as I can figure. It's not really a bulbous look. The way the film...
  42. TraamisVOS

    How about this nutty idea...

Could you post some photos from that fisheye/olympus combo if possible? I want to see if it has that look that I'm after. A 7.5mm on a m43 would be a perfect 15mm equivalent but a fisheyeat 7.5mm would make it so distorted to I think. What does "single in" mean?
  43. TraamisVOS

    How about this nutty idea...

So I've been really enjoying the Widelux look (or the poor man's version that I have - the Horizon Perfekt). There's something about the Widelux's quirkyness that I prefer over the Xpan. It is beautifully panoramic, has deep depth of field, and iis wiiiiide, and that slightly warped...
