    Pentax Pentax KP

Another fisheye shot, taken on a cloudy morning stroll. I'm not used to shooting with an FOV this w-i-d-e so framing is always an ongoing adventure. But the RAW Pentax DNG's from the KP are, as always, very malleable.

    Pentax Pentax KP

A trio of shots taken with one of my least-used but still favorite Pentax lenses - the DA 10-17 zoom - which varies between a rectilinear fisheye and merely an ultra wide-angle. I like the fish-eye effect, especially coming in close to my subject-- And moving a bit farther away gives that...

    Pentax Pentax KP

When I haven't used the KP for awhile, I tend to forget what a great camera it is. Then I pick it up and....somehow wind up taking a few pictures. Of anything within range. Which in this case happens to be....the photographer himself.

The 50mm macro really renders beautifully. I've been looking at this entire series you have taken with it - and have come to the inescapable conclusion: it's a great lens :) Nice pictures, too.

Taken with my K-01 and its tiny pancake lens, the DA40 - looking through the window of a closed bookstore, a little before sundown, but the 'Bookstore Angel' was illuminated, a rather ethereal effect in real life at least.

    Pentax Pentax image thread

Such a lovely, moody image, John. And if one had any doubts, this photograph shows off some of the virtues of that very cool little zoom lens, the DA 20-40. I think that's one of the reasons I've always liked shooting with Pentaxes - they seem to have a knack for coming up with relatively...

Tired feet after a long day of hiking. Fortunately I didn't have to lug a heavy camera up and down the steep trails: the K-01 is diminutive enough not to be a burden.

Such a lovely image, Sue. I especially like the tones - the richness - the palette - the hues. Oh, and, yes, the composition too. All in all, a great photograph. And, if it were necessary, a testimony to the ongoing photographic qualities and capabilities of the K-5, a great camera.

When shooting in very very low available-light conditions, at 25,600 ISO, my K-01 shows significantly more grain than images taken with the newer (and more high-ISO-capable) sensor of my KP - but on the other hand, in some images, I don't mind the grain (and PeeWee doesn't seem to mind it all...

Both versions look good to me - but in simple (or maybe simplistic) terms, the Apple Photos rendition seems to have more saturation than the Capture1 version. They both have an appeal - but personally I prefer a little bit more saturation in this image.

Taken with my K-01 and that oh-so-cool tiny pancake lens, the DA 40, inside my writing office where the legacy of last Halloween is still present. Moral of the story: in this day and age of 24mp and 45mp and soon-to-be 61 megapixel sensors....the X-01's now positively ancient (seemingly)...

    Pentax Pentax image thread

I think you are right, it was the same sensor Pentax put in the K-5, and also appeared in the Nikon 7000. Made by Sony and quite a capable one, too. But actually if truth be told, and as we all know, it's not so much the sensor - or even the lenses - but ultimately the eye of the photographer...

Hey, Milan--- Thanks for the Cameraville recommendation, Milan - I checked it out, it is a fascinating - and informative - website. The books you are reading sound 'right up my alley', too ... I'm going to have to make a note of them. Incidentally, I was in Mexico City this year on Día de...

One more shot, with the micro-pancake 40mm lens, taken during the madness of post-Christmas 'Sales' - this Nutcracker had an almost surreal presence, and seemed to be secretly surveilling the exhausted shoppers ;)

    Pentax Pentax KP

Good question, Milan...I wonder about that myself. Except I think these days, people in many places either are obsessed with - or have a fondness for - the macabre. Look at the commercialization and marketing of Halloween, look at the proliferation of zombie movies and TV series, just to...

    Pentax Pentax KP

A telephoto view of Oregon geese, flying across the Siskiyou mountains of southern Oregon near my home on a cold, foggy, winter day. Taken with my new (to me) telephoto zoom lens, which I'm still trying to figure out how exactly to use.

And the Halloween beat goes on. And Día de los Muertos - the Mexican Day of the Dead - is almost upon us. The day when, as tradition has it, we are visited by the spirits of family members and loved ones we have lost. Who have died. As the novelist John Green points out, philosophically, "There...

    Pentax Pentax KP

    Pentax Pentax KP

If I didn't already have this version (the SMC non-HD older one), I would be seriously tempted by the newer one as well. The cool thing about the design is that it becomes much much more rectilinear at the 17mm end, whereas at the wide end it is much more of a fisheye. I don't shoot with it that...

Another Halloween image, this one taken with that weird-but-cool Pentax fisheye zoom lens, the DA 10-17mm, closer to the fisheye end -- My former fisheye, a Rokinon which I used on micro 4/3 bodies, was clinically sharp - but this lens, coupled with the KP's excellent sensor, has some...

    Pentax Pentax KP

Speaking of the 40mm focal length - which let's not forget is technically a classic 60mm Field-of-View - I keep being surprised by its versatility. Portraits. Check. Available light. Check. And much to my surprise: Landscapes (in a manner of speaking). Check. This was taken at sunset, in...

    Pentax Pentax KP

The good news about the K-70 is ... relatively speaking, the prices of K-70's, used but in excellent condition, have been coming down lately. Significantly, I believe. I understand the problem of not needing or wanting to purchase newer cameras...because the older ones that one has are so...

    Pentax Pentax KP

The lens I keep coming back to, which surprises me, is the DA 40 Ltd - one of the tiniest modern 'pancake' lenses that Pentax has produced in recent years. The weird part is that, with a Field-of-View equivalent to a 60mm classic lens, it's a little more telephoto than the so-called normal (50mm...

    Pentax Pentax KP

A handful of shots taken with my new (to me) lightly used DA 70 - the equivalent of the 105mm Super Takumar which I used to shoot regularly on my analog Pentaxes. Pentax Pentax KP

Tyler Monson, one of my favorite photographers, who has happened to use a number of Pentax cameras over the years, shot a lot of photos with the DA 21 - its 21mm lens having an equivalent F.O.V. or field of view to the classic 35mm lens. I looked at - and liked - so many of his photographs -...

I agree with all your points, Steve - especially the ones about the superb image quality. The tiny ultra-thin pancake DA 40 lens does double-duty both for wider landscape and general photography - and as a decent portrait lens for available light shooting. The other lens in the small trinity of Pentax lenses I currently own - the minuscule (calling it a pancake doesn't really give an idea of just how tiny this lens really is) DA 40mm Ltd - which, with a F.O.V. (Field of View) roughly equivalent to a 60mm lens, is close to the old classic 50mm...

Taken with the DA 10-17mm fisheye mounted on my KP in limited available light. The lens has surprisingly decent close-up (semi-macro) capabilities. Pentax Pentax KP

I can't quite make up my mind. I know it's possible to get great photographs from most modern digital cameras. When I say 'modern', I don't mean this year's latest-and-greatest models - including the Pentax KP which I just bought (though technically it was released a year ago), but older ones...
