The April 2020 Challenge - discussions and insights

I can’t imagine how you found the time every day to make these wonderful images. Perhaps it was your little bit of zen-time? No matter, I appreciated them tremendously.

    The April 2020 Challenge - day 30

It seemed appropriate to end the month with a Covid-19 image, since that's what's been on my mind all month. The owners of this house change this dog's outfit by season, and all this month s/he has been standing sentinel as a tribute to all the First Responders. God bless them all and may they...

    The April 2020 Challenge - day 30

A A nice tribute, and quite a guy. He deserves all the notoriety and good wishes he's getting. I saw a picture in today's Boston Globe of someone another birthday card to the other 65,000 that have already been sent to him. Quite a site!

    The April 2020 Challenge - day 29

What to say? We redid our kitchen and had to close up two windows, leaving this one. I asked if we could make it a bit deeper, thinking of plants. I seem to love creating little still life scenes all around the house, and this one evolved bit by bit. We have a 'bunny' thing going in our house...

Educate me. Is this lens a macro? Wondering how you get so close and get most of that thready thing in focus and everything out, but nicely so.

    The April 2020 Challenge - day 28

As much as I try to shoot larger, wider scenes, I'm always drawn to these smaller still life vignettes. It's as if I hear them calling out to me saying "look at me, look at me!".

The April 2020 Challenge - discussions and insights

This month has been interesting, and I'm grateful that you all are here doing this 'thing' and that you welcomed me into your midst. I decided to 'retire' from being a professional photographer shooting special events and portraits as of the first of this year. Since that time I haven't even...

The April 2020 Challenge - outtakes and alternatives

Someone told me about a challenge from another group to create an image using a cookie sheet. Couldn't decide whether I liked the one that showed the edge of the pan or the one that was totally abstract.

Strayed from my 50mm again. Mea culpa, but there was no way I could get close enough to this Downy Woodpecker with it. As it is, I had to crop in severely even with my 70-200mm.

    The April 2020 Challenge - day 25

There used to be a very unsightly elevated highway that ran through our downtown, cutting off tourists and workers from our waterfront. After great expense and many years of disruption, the highway is underground, and the Rose Kennedy Greenway is in its place. These two images are my favorites...

    The April 2020 Challenge - day 24

Rainy day outside, so looked in the house for inspiration. First I tried the gas boiler in the basement, but nothing worthy came of it. Instead, I present to you Stromanthe Triostar. A beautiful tri-color plant, but damned hard to grow properly. The leaves keep getting shorter and shorter as I...

Before the blossoms went away I wanted to get something closer than my 50mm would give me, so I went out with my 100mm f/2.8. Breaking the rules, sorry.

Peekaboo, I see you! I do love noticing life, especially blossoms that will only be around for a short while. These are Grape hyacinth, by the way (aka Muscari armeniacum).

    The April 2020 Challenge - day 21

Nicely done. Usually I don't like the top of a tree against a sky...find it hard to have it framed properly. Somehow this works. All the sky and the tree a tad off center seems to do it. Colors help. :-)

Could you say more about the ‘eye relief’? I’m still using a Canon 5DMarkIV, so I don’t really know what you’re talking about. Recently retired from shooting professionally, and will be buying into the mirrorless or 4/3 market, so I’m interested. If this thread should be elsewhere, please say...

    The April 2020 Challenge - day 19

Not terribly creative, as I was short on time, but it is in line with my intent to practice shooting wide open with the 50mm, shallow depth of field, etc.

    The April 2020 Challenge - day 18

We got snow today! I was so torn between going out in it or staying home, where I could have my coffee and stay warm and cozy. Somehow I found the gumption to pretend I was young again and go out. I was hoping to find some images showing how the spring flowers were holding up in the snow, and...

These pussy willows (and their shadows) sit in a vase that belonged to my grandparents. The sepia processing seemed to fit the mood of 'remembering'. Shadows does that for me, too, as well as the slight out-of-focus feel to the image.

I went out this morning to take more photos on Peters Hill, and then, later, while I was making my lunch I was struck by the simplicity and vibrancy of these red and yellow peppers sitting on my cutting board with the sun shining on them and creating these hard shadows. And there you have it...
