I'm an animal photographer. I came from the world of professional wedding and family portraits but got out of the business because of having to deal with people. Now retired I no longer sell my work but still take tons of portraits, mostly of animals.
My favorite hangout for inspiration in my...
This is a personal thankyou to all the membership here that whined and complained about the Fuji X-E1 until Fuji finally came out with 3-4 new models that turned the wonderful X-E1 into a Kodak instamatic. The reason I bought the X-E1 when it was first released was because it had a retro look...
On Scott Kelby's "The Grid" series online RC Conception discussed how his feelings toward mirrorless cameras has been changing over the last two years. He has deemed them worth of use in certain limited applications such as street photography. RC is a big Nikon fan who works for KelbyOne, and...
Mikhail & Nicole are brother & sister Amur Tigers. They, along with their counterpart Amur Leopards are on the endangered species list. "Mikki & Nikki" just celebrated their birthday on Halloween as they reach their middle ages. It's unusual to catch them together sleeping in their cave...
Cricket was transfixed on the zoo's new Lion cubs across the hallway. Normally she is non-stop motion in her own environment. Now, she stood motionless watching the new cats just 20 feet away. It was easy to capture this extreme close-up with my Fuji X-E1 and 55-200mm F/3.5-4.8 lens.
This was taken 75 feet from the cave where Mikhail was resting. "Mikki" is one of two Amur Tigers at the Portland, Oregon Zoo. He shares his home here with his sister, Nikki. This was taken with my Fuji X-E1 with the 55-200mm F/3.5-4.8 lens aboard.
One of the things I've learned to love about my Fuji X-E1 camera is the close-up work I can do with the 55-200mm F/3.5-4.8 Fujinon zoom. It produces backgrounds that are interesting as well as pleasing.
Conrad is one of two polar bears at the Portland, Oregon Zoo. I now have four photos in my "Reflections" series of photos of these bears. Three are Black & White.
Since I love weathered wood this was a natural subject. It's the entrance to a zoo concession shack at the Portland, Oregon Zoo. Fuji X-E1 60mm F/2.4 Macro.
This bear was hilarious trying to flatten this plastic barrel. He jumped up and down on it 20 times at least. He's get it nearly flat and it would suddenly pop back to its original shape. I had to take many frames to stop the action at the top of his bounce. I used my Fuji X-E1 with my 55-200mm...
The growing season is finished. The pumpkins are picked and on display. The Jim Dandy Farm Market is putting up its annual display of character in preparation for the store's annual closing after Halloween. I found these characters delightful. All were taken with my Fuji X-E1 with an 18-55mm...
This was an interesting test at ISO 6400. I did use Topaz DeNoise to reduce the existing noise. The shot was handheld, as usual, without flash. I wanted maximum background blur so I shot this at 200mm at F/4.8, wide open. I like the way it turned out.
I'm still experimenting with my new lenses which includes the Fujinon 60mm F/2.4 Macro. This particular Lorikeet was so brilliantly color I had to grab a picture. ISO 800 F/10, 1/50". Fuji X-E1
I'm still experimenting with my new gear since I now have 5 lenses to go along with my new X-E1. I learned how to combine the "Macro" button with my 60mm F/2.4 Macro lens today. It's tricky but not impossible to get even closer that without the "Macro" button. I shot this at F/2.4, ISO 3200...
This is one of my favorite coffee stops while touring back roads on my scooter. It's the Black Bear Coffee Company in Vernonia, Oregon. This little town was in it's prime when the logging industry peaked. Now, it's a sleepy little town with a 1/4 mile long main street full of quaint little mom &...
I just received my 18mm & 60mm lenses by UPS yesterday. I couldn't wait to get out the door to test them both. I headed straight for the Jim Dandy Farm Market to get close-up flower shots with the macro. They have beautiful flowers in the field just full of bees & bugs, a macro lover's "Field of...
I used this side-by-side comparison with my students to show the usefulness of shooting in RAW format. The dynamic range is so great there's a tremendous range of highlight & shadow that can be overcome.
Today's Portland, Oregon Zoo visit produced a couple of really nice captures of the zoo's Gerenuk, a species of antelope also known as Waller's Gazelle. Their graceful long necks & legs allow them to stand on their hind legs to reach leaves. I had my Fuji X-E1 with 55-200mm F/3.5-4.8 lens aboard.
It's no secret I love animals. Years ago I used to be a people photographer professionally. I fell in love with animals 7 years ago when I moved to Oregon. The state of the union belongs to nature. 90% of Oregon's population lives on just 10% of Oregon's land. The rest is wild.
The Amur...
I just love this close-up portrait I took today of an Amur Leopard at the Portland, Oregon Zoo. Boris is the first animal I visit on my zoo visits. He has the kindest, most laid back personality I've ever witnessed. I deliberately left the grain unedited as I like the added texture.
I bought my Fuji X-E1 July 27 with 3 lenses, the 18-55mm, 35mm & 55-200mm. I just missed the June Fuji lens sale. Now another sale appears and I thought I was out of luck again. A phone call to the dealer who sold me my camera turned out beneficial as he gave me the discount price on any...
All cats act like house cats given the right situation. Kya was no exception last week when the trainers left her a box to enjoy. Both the lioness and the zoo visitors got a lot of entertainment out of this simple toy. At least she didn’t try and get in it! That would have be a great photo...
This was a one second snapshot that I took so fast John, the subject barely realized I was framing him when I squeezed the shutter. There was no hesitation in focusing as the shutter and focus lock beep went off together. Still, the focus was very sharp. I converted the brightly colored original...
This will be my 3rd Really Right Stuff setup. I've had custom L-Plates made for my Nikon D800 & D7000. The one in the mail for my X-E1 has the grip attached. I also ordered the quick release plate for my tripod. Really Right Stuff builds quality products that protect your camera and increase its...
