Micro 4/3 Wide angle Lawoa or ?

I have the Laowa 10mm on my second camera. My main camera has the Oly 12-45mm, but sometimes 12mm isnā€™t quite wide enough, and out comes the 10mm. Image quality is very good, and distortion is not obvious. For my purposes, 10mm is as wide as I care to go (Iā€™ve tried 9mm but would often end up...

Advice Wanted Adobe Camera Raw and Olympus/Panasonic lens profiles

Thatā€™s one of the things I like about M43. At wider focal lengths (typically wider than 20mm) more image is captured than what the default profile reveals. I use DxO PhotoLab to recover these extra pixels from some images, but as John noted other software can also recover the extra pixels.

Advice Wanted Adobe Camera Raw and Olympus/Panasonic lens profiles

Micro 4/3 lenses have built-in profiles that are automatically applied, which means thereā€˜s no profiles to select in Lightroom.

    Straps Disintegrated Wrist Strap

I always hold the camera in my hand, but once in a while it slips out. Thatā€™s when the wrist strap failed, and the camera continued in a downward direction. Unless you glue the camera to your hand, it could happen to you, too!

    Straps Disintegrated Wrist Strap

After a wrist strap failed and my camera hit the sidewalk, I now only use wrist straps that have no parts that could unexpectedly fail. I use wrist straps made of a thick tough cord attached to the camera lug with a metal split ring.

    Cloud Storage ....

Used Dropbox for years, from when it was in beta. Switched to Sync three years ago for the end-to-end encryption and lower price. Also data is stored on Canadian servers, which as a Canadian is important to me. No regrets, Syncā€™s performance has improved to the point that it is now comparable to...

Apple Mac Mini - which arrangement to use? Processor or storage?

Keep in mind that eventually Apple will discontinue support for the M1. The M2 will hang in a bit longer before support is discontinued. So if you want to maximize the lifespan of your investment, the M2 is a better choice.

    Vertical shooting style

Right hand on top because that way my nose clears the camera. Otherwise my nose would be squashed against the screen. I just have to remember to keep my right elbow tucked in for stability and so as not to stand out any more than necessary.

Camera histograms - are they useful?

No. For my purposes the histogram isnā€™t useful. Blinkies are better but still not great. What works for me is that over time Iā€™ve learned how my camera over/underexposes and I adjust the exposure comp as needed. If I have the time Iā€™ll take a few photos at different exposures, otherwise I may...

    Protection Cold Weather Gloves

What Iā€™ve learned after wearing out many pairs of gloves is that thinner is better for handling a camera, and gloves with conductive patches sewn onto the fingers will maintain their touchscreen capability longer then gloves where the conductive material is woven into the fabric. Windproof...

    Formatting memory card

Like John, I use the SD Memory Card Formatter from the SD Association to format my new SD cards, which I then format in the camera, and after that I just delete files without reformatting (unless I switch the card to another camera). I use a Mac. The SD Memory Card Formatter is available for...

Alternatives to the now departed Amazon Drive for offsite photo storage

I use Sync for cloud storage (and sync between devices). I was a long-time Dropbox user (all the way back to the beta), but switched to Sync for the end-to-end encryption and lower prices. For cloud backup I use Arq and backup to OneDrive. I get a total of 5 TB of storage with a Microsoft 365...

GAS What was your best purchase of 2022?

A Laowa 10mm f2 lens for my Pen-F. When I upgraded to an E-M5iii + 12-45mm kit a couple of years ago, my Pen-F went into retirement. The PDAF on the E-M5iii is so much better than the Pen-Fā€™s CDAF that I couldnā€™t imagine ever going back. The manual focus Laowa lens negates any AF concerns, and...

    Camera/Lens/Accessories Deal-Breakers.

My only dealbreaker is image stabilization, body and/or lens. I could make do without a lot of things, even a viewfinder and a tilting screen, but I couldnā€™t do without some form of stabilization.

Apple iPhone - Non-Pro Models - RAW Shooting Apps

I'm reviving this thread to report that ProCamera, my overall favourite iOS camera app, now includes presets. I prefer the implementation of presets in ProCamera compared to CameraPixels, so I'm now going to use ProCamera exclusively to shoot RAW on my iPhone. Note that presets in ProCamera are...

    Software DxO PhotoLab 6

I forgot to mention the other reason I upgraded. VP4 works on Apple silicon as well as Intel, whereas VP3 is Intel only. I would have to upgrade to VP4 when I upgrade my Mac in a year or two, so I figured I might as well upgrade now.

    Software DxO PhotoLab 6

I upgraded to VP4 solely for the ReShape tool. Yes, I can use Photoshop to do similar warping, and probably easier (the ReShape tool is a bit fiddly/tedious to use), but with VP4 inside PL6 Iā€™m doing it to the RAW image rather than to a demosaiced and processed TIFF. If the ReShape tool isnā€™t...

    Software DxO PhotoLab 6

If youā€™re also a Lightroom user, you can use Adobeā€™s DCP profiles. Another option is to buy profiles from Huelight. Either way, you donā€™t have to stick with the DxO default colour profiles.

Apple iPhone - Non-Pro Models - RAW Shooting Apps

Iā€™ll add a few more comments about the two iOS camera apps that I use; ProCamera (ProCamera + HDR - the next dimension in iOS mobile photography!) and CameraPixels (https://camerapixels.app). I mentioned in an earlier post that I originally bought the apps to shoot RAW, at a time when shooting...

GAS GAS: Please Share your Latest Acquisitions Big and Small

+1 for the Practice of Contemplative Photography. I picked it up many years ago, and took a couple of workshops with the author, Michael Wood. The basic premise (Iā€™m paraphrasing here) is to slow down and listen to your intuition/instinct and what it is attracted to in terms of creating a...

Apple iPhone - Non-Pro Models - RAW Shooting Apps

I use both ProCamera and Halide Mark II on my iPhone XS. My Halide subscription expires next month and I wonā€™t be renewing it. I like Halide, itā€˜s a well-designed app with good features such as SmartRAW and a useful widget, but IMO itā€™s not enough to justify the cost of the subscription (thereā€™s...

    Portable SSD drives

I use HDDs for backups. They cost far less than SSDs, and thereā€™s no advantage to using a SSD to store files that are just sitting there. HDDs are reliable for long-term storage so long as theyā€™re used every few months to write data, and they come in 20+ TB sizes (Seagate recently announced that...

    Micro 4/3 OM-1 post-processing software

If you want to use the current version of Camera Raw you need the current version of Photoshop. Apple Some Mac-based options for photo management and editing, not in the cloud

One more point regarding Photos on a Mac. You can use multiple libraries with Photos, with the PowerPhotos app. So if you want to have a library for personal photos, a separate library for work photos, and another library for travel photos, you can do that.

Apple Some Mac-based options for photo management and editing, not in the cloud

Iā€™d suggest Photos, as you already own it and the current version is pretty darn good as a DAM, and decent as a Raw developer. You can ignore the cloud aspect of it and just use it on your Mac, but if later you want to expand to an iPhone or iPad (or another Mac) itā€™s easy to do via iCloud...

Software Any Adobe Illustrator users around who could help out with something?

If you want to open the file in another graphics app, Illustrator .ai files are a form of PDF file, and can often be opened by changing the file extension to .pdf. Otherwise, you can use an online converter to convert to PDF (AI to PDF - Convert your AI to PDF for Free Online) or SVG (AI to SVG...

The best camera for street photography?

Good to hear! I like snap/zone focus, but because the zone of focus is fixed it means that in some situations too many people end up at the edges of the zone, not quite in focus. If people are coming towards me with most or all of their faces visible, then I will often use autofocus with face...

The best camera for street photography?

I ignored face detection for many years, but recently tried it and decided that (for me) itā€™s a benefit for street photography when Iā€™m using autofocus. If you havenā€™t tried it, give it a whirl and you might find you like it!

The best camera for street photography?

Interesting question, for which the best answer is ā€œit depends.ā€ The best camera for street photography depends on whatā€™s important to the photographer. In my case, one of the most important factors is depth of field, and I generally want a lot, especially when using zone focus, which I do much...

Panasonic Panasonic LX7 dying - what next?

Interesting discussion. I own a Canon G7X (original version, but basically the same lens and sensor as the Mark II version). Image quality doesnā€™t match M43 or larger-sensor cameras, which is to expected. I donā€™t use the G7X much, and if it stopped working tomorrow I wouldnā€™t replace it. I would...
