Sony Announces NEX-7, NEX 5N, and three new E Mount Lenses

I haven't had the guts to preorder mine yet ($2500 when you add in the Zeiss lens and a handful of legacy lens adaptors :). But now I have a serious case of G.A.S. ... for the first time since I got my GH-2. (I'm not counting the 12mm & 25mm µ4/3 lenses. I'm just waiting for those to show up.)

I'm kind of fond of the square format: Eichler in, Eichler out Venus & St. Ignatius Pigeon netting Most of my pix are cropped in the LCD, since I learned to shoot with (decades of) slides. But most of those which are cropped (other than minimally) are cropped square.

Micro 4/3 m4/3 prices on the rise ... urghh

About a month ago I ordered a GH2 on the Panasonic EPP site (through facebook). Yesterday they announced that they will be shipping all "legitimate" orders by the end of this week. (Why did I post in this thread?) I was trying to figure out why I ordered it at $675, and it's now listed at $765...

    Micro 4/3 E-P2 to G2 - some experiential observations

Hi Simsort - What did you decide to buy? I continue to be very happy with my G2, and they're currently available very cheaply ($300 from Panasonic itself, through facebook). On the other hand, if you want to wait, I suspect the new G3 will be a better camera and will have a lower initial list...

    Micro 4/3 E-P2 to G2 - some experiential observations

7b) Yet another small advantage of the Lumix G2 The bottom plate of the E-P2 is a soft metal. If I put a fairly heavy lens on the camera, it would tend to sag a bit on the tripod. Kind of scary, so I backed off. But the one on the G2 seems much more well-grounded into the body and frame of...

B&W Black & White, monotone and sepia

"Black & White, monotone and sepia" ... hmmm ... This is a full color photo (pretty accurate color, actually) of a "Black & White, monotone and sepia" subject. This was one of the first shots I took with a Canon S3is, about 4-5 years ago. I ended up pretty happy with the camera for a year or two.

The Circle of Confusion, 'Do Sensors "Outresolve" Lenses?' and Our Digital Demands

Here's a real-world example (Lumix G2, 1/50sec ISO100, Panasonic/Leica 45mm macro open to f/2.8) Cropped and exported to jpg, no other post. In this case, I suspect the lens outperforms the sensor, in traditional terms. Both the sharp highlight detail in the foreground and the soft bokeh in...

Panasonic Panasonic µ4/3 noise & noise reduction

So I was reading the noise page of a review of the Sony SLT-A55 on DigitalCameraInfo.com, and came across a pair of interesting charts. The second shows how badly the DMC-G2 (my camera) fares against the competition in terms of image noise (with in-camera noise reduction applied): It's...

Thanks, BB, but it's a bit misleading. Reflective surfaces seem more reflective at a sharp angle. In fact, if you look carefully, you'll see some warping of the floorboards toward the left side. But I like to sit on the floor, and I can never get bored with a camera in my hands :)

Nikon Nikon launches a competitor to the Canon G11 and Panasonic LX5

Agreed. But that's Nikon's signature, and always has been. Kind of an ugly-chique thing. My old Nikon film rangefinder was -way- ugly compared to the sleek Olympus XA it replaced, but it was a better photo machine. And my first digital camera, a CoolPix 5000 superzoom from the beginning of...

Nikon Nikon launches a competitor to the Canon G11 and Panasonic LX5

Nikon launches the Coolpix P7000. dpreview of course gets to do a hands-on d'preview. Note the head-to-head comparison on the second page. The P7000 looks like an obvious clone of the G11, and the LX5 looks forlorn and out of place. (Though it probably towers over the G95.) And if Bob...

Olympus M. Zuiko Digital 14-150mm f/4-5.6 Lens Review

Hi Amin - This is really wonderful work on your part. I'm not in the market for a superzoom. (I'd rather have anything over about 50mm (100mm FF equivalent) in a bag rather than hanging off of my camera, and I already have the 45-200mm and a slew of long legacy lenses.) But I'm impressed...

8b) Another item missed from the E-P2 My memory of the E-P2 is starting to fade, but a post on mu-43 reminded me of another item that kind of bugs me on the G2: Exposure preview. When you stop down a manual-focus lens, then adjust the speed, the Olympus tends to give you a fairly accurate...

    Micro 4/3 E-P2 to G2 - some experiential observations

    9) One final note Image Quality I had originally planned to compare the IQ of the two cameras, and to note that I felt the Olympus just plain made better pictures than the Lumix. This was actually going to be my biggest complaint against the G2. Then I read Amin's Shootout, and at one point...

    7) An amazing collection of little benefits Control Layout and General Handling I don't think I can possibly do an adequate job of enumerating all of these. I've had the G2 for almost two months now, and I'm still finding new gems. In general, the G2 feels more like it was designed to be a...

    Micro 4/3 E-P2 to G2 - some experiential observations

    6) The viewfinders I really liked the E-P2's viewfinder, and particularly liked the fact that it flips up. Micro 4/3 E-P2 to G2 - some experiential observations

    5) The kit lenses I thought this one would be a wash. I never really warmed up to the E-P2's kit lens. I'm OK somehow with the fact that the 9-18mm lens has to be opened up before it can be used, but that's a specialty lens. For a walkabout lens, that extra step kind of defeats the purpose...

    4) Biggest unexpected loss Emotional This one is kind of embarrassing. I don't really know why, but I really loved playing with the E-P2. It reminded me so much of my old OM's, both of which were stolen on a nighttime train ride almost 30 years ago. It felt good to be using an Olympus camera...

    Micro 4/3 E-P2 to G2 - some experiential observations

    3) Biggest unexpected benefit The Touch Screen I must admit, I thought the touch screen was mostly a gimmick. I was completely wrong. First, the touch to focus interaction was the one I thought might be useful. It's not relevant for manual-focus lenses, of course, but moving the focus...

    Micro 4/3 E-P2 to G2 - some experiential observations

    2) Primary expected loss (why I originally chose Olympus) In-Body Image Stabilization I have a couple of lenses with OIS, and one of them I really like: the Lumix/Leica 45mm. Micro 4/3 Macro lens for m4/3

I would agree fully with Antonio, but with a (big) catch. I found that the autofocus on the E-P2 was unreliable: slow and iffy. Canon Canon releases S95

My S90 has been in my pocket for a year now, and this one is claiming to be much better in the IQ department. Yes! It fixes a bug that completely stopped my workflow (originally worked up using LR1, and no problem with LR2): in LR3.0 you can't import pix from one library (say, a temporary/processing library) to another (in this case my final, organized library) if both have files in the same folder...
