    Return From Africa

Thanks. Actually, my entire luggage for the month-long trip was a carry-on bag that weighed 16 lbs. Traveling light has become a way of life, almost. Spent a month in Papua New Guinea last year and again, one carry-on bag at 16 lbs. It is very liberating in some ways.

I agree. For instance, there were some of the most beautiful birds I have ever seen in my life. Was only able to get close enough to a couple of them for a photo.

    Return From Africa

Thank you. Yes, I only had the one lens for the camera. It was a working trip, not really a vacation, so Im afraid not much thought went into the photography side until I had arrived and saw what was around me. Then I was simply pushed into working to make do with what I had. The lions are very...

Actually, they were in another place, and we were not in the truck. A guide was throwing chunks of raw chicken and keeping them occupied and ... satisfied.

    Return From Africa

I was in Botswana setting up the beginning of a Horseback outfitter's business we are starting there. These pictures were taken in South Africa in Polanisburg (sp?), we were in a truck, and decided to stay there! I loved it there. I'll be happy to be any help I can if you need input on the trip.

    Return From Africa

Just returned from a month in Africa, part of the time in South Africa and part of the time in Botswana. My camera was a Olympus EP-3 I have just acquired and a 45mm lens that was manual focus. Talk about setting yourself up with handicaps! I'm placing them here in order to learn, so any and all...

    Animals Show "Horses"

My sons took advantage of a rise in temperatures and went for a ride Thursday. This is Jesse getting Josie out of the pen. The snow is is over 3 feet deep off of the trails, and Josie momentarily wandered off the trail. I did some pp, but I am still struggling with exposures and snow.

    Australian Photography Rules?

I spent 3 days in Sydney 2 years ago waiting for a connecting flight to Port Moresby. Walked all over the city, botanical gardens, museums, parks etc. Took lots of pictures. Never had any trouble, but I tried to use common sense and common courtesy that would apply to simple humanity, not...

Critique Wanted What should I have done?

Actually, I did not try those. I am just beginning, so most of what i do is auto, including focus. But I can see, now that you mention it, that if I had manually focused on the spot I was having trouble with, it probably would have helped. I suppose there was nothing defined enough in the ice...

Critique Wanted What should I have done?

I took this photo today. Light was bad out I know, but there was a lot of little reflections I could see off of the ice crystals up inside the bowl underneath. I tried auto, with and without a flash, macro settings and changing white balance and shutter speeds. Never could get the camera to see...

    Any Other Hobbies ?

I horseback ride in the backcountry mountains here in Alaska, average 15 - 20 miles a weekend during the summer. I also make custom leather work, mostly holsters for handguns and hunting knives. Used to play the guitar a lot more, but never was any good at it. Love to read, mostly the old stuff...

Critique Wanted Starting at the bottom

Thanks for all of the advice and info. I was not sure if the blue tint was acceptable, though I know it is common for snow. When I tried to do some tweaking on the computer with color balance and get less blue, I wound up with a lot less definition in the picture as a whole, and I lost the bar...

    Animals Show "Horses"

I am glad I found this thread! I have two horses here in Alaska, and my son has one. We have ridden professionally for years as guides and trainers and I cowboyed for a while years ago. I will have to limber up my camera for this. I don't know if this is OK, if not I apologize and will remove...

    Hello from Alaska

Thanks for the welcome, guys. For you folks in Australia, I will be coming through Brisbane on my way to PNG on March 5th. I've been to Oz several times and love it. It is truly beautiful, both in the gentle shape of the rolling hill and the wonderful color contrasts. I would frame it and hang it on my wall if it were mine.

My first post, my first picture. Alaska in January, lots of snow and poor light. The camera is an Olympus E-420 and the lens is an Olympus Digita 14-42mm. Hello from Alaska

I am probably going to be the most inexperienced poster on here. My Dad is a member here, snkenai, and I followed him over. He recently gave me an Olympus E-420, so that is what I am going to be learning with. My background is in cowboying, horse training, hunting and church ministry (strange...
