Just starting to use GIMP myself so can't help you, however, a good book is GIMP 2.6 for Photographers by Klaus Goelker. I bought it on Amazon (used) for basically the cost of shipping. I think he bookstore wanted to get rid o it at any cost.

Very nice photos. I especially love the one with the numerous photogs waiting for the right moment at Zabriskie Point (I'm assuming that's the location). Last time I was there my friend and I were the only people there: it was 22 degreesF. Cold! I love Death Valley and hope to be there again...
