Serious Compacts Podcast 1: Arrival of the 'X' Cameras

I have to admit not listened to the podcast, but I do really like that metal print wall Terry! And for those interested in podcasts about photography, and less about gear, there are always the excellent interviews by Paul Giguere at Thoughts on Photography.

    Philosophy About 'Stroll Photography'

When I first wrote about stroll photography on blog I said I was proud to be a stroll photographer. My blog displays these stroll photographs, but it is just great that you guys felt the need for a hangout to share and talk about it too. And Arie, it is absolutely not my intention set the bar...

    Philosophy About 'Stroll Photography'

Early 2012 I, Wouter Brandsma, mentioned a kind photography in a topic that is thoughtful, personal, but without the need for going to a destination with a plan. A kind of photography where the process of taking photographs could become the destination. The SeriousCompacts team (Amin and the...

Stuck in a Photographic Rut and Losing Momentum

Photography should be a passion, but not an obsession. When that happens you don't want to take photographs, but you have to take photographs. Just like a runner who runs two hours a day (at least) and when he can't do it, because he has other obligations, he starts to feel really bad about it...

Stuck in a Photographic Rut and Losing Momentum

A few minutes stroll is not a luxury. And the time is always there, always. We however don't always allow us the time to have some personal time. That is huge difference.

Stuck in a Photographic Rut and Losing Momentum

Exactly Amin. I started my photo a day project last year to conquer my doldrums and what I learned was to appreciate the process of taking a photograph, seeing a moment, even if the time available is minimal. Still serious and thoughtful, like you say, but unplanned. Just strolling around and...

Stuck in a Photographic Rut and Losing Momentum

We are of the same kind Andrew. I used to enjoy listening to music all the time. Now the kids watch Disney XD or Nickelodeon all the time and I am grateful that I can enjoy listening to music on my cell phone. And a Lesser Photographer doesn't necessarily need to be seen as a Less Serious...

Stuck in a Photographic Rut and Losing Momentum

When you have little time available, but you really want to photograph certain subjects it can give a whole lot of pressure. I used to do landscapes and I tried to do a lot of street photography, but all these subjects already need time to travel to certain places. Now I use my rare time to...

    Help! ''Off-photography period' :-(

I have been beaten to death by the lack of inspiration very often. I hated it very often, because most of the time I really wanted to take photographs. First I thought about enjoying the spare time (didn't work), starting drawing again (even thought about quiting photography, but in the end...

My Photographic Life in a Single Post (or How I Came to Be a Compact Camera User)

Great to see you team up with Amin and others here at seriouscompacts. And it is a reminder that I should have contacted you the previous month. I will sent you a PM very soon! When it comes to the little Ricoh fella. I love that camera too!

    Photographic Cliches

I agree with your comments Olli that cliche often has an unfortunate negative sentiment. While much of photography and art for that matter is in my opinion largely based on cliches. Not only because the maker can relay to that, but also the viewer. It is much easier to recognize beauty in...

What is street photography? a video and discussion

That is so well said, Djarum. What attracts me in street photography is how it emotionally affects me. It is not just finding interesting subjects and bringing content and form together. It is more an emotional quest where I see, feel, and breath the moment. It was and still is very challenging...

    Vivian Maier (New Website)

Mind blowing work. Thank you for putting this up Don. Hard to realize that you she photographed for so many years and never shared her work.

    A Wish for Simplicity

Interesting how this tread pops up again. In my article I am not really implying an easier to operate camera, but a camera that is focused on the basics with dedicated dials for shutter speed, ISO speed and a proper aperture ring. Although the latter seems nowadays most unlikely. Therefore I can...

Compact Cameras and the Threat of Camera Phones

I find it interesting how we search for the holy grail in quality and in the meantime expect convenience as a normality. Large sensors, many megapixels, HD television, 4k video cameras, but also iphone photographs on the front page of the NY Times, skype interviews at cable news networks, cell...

    Critique Wanted Color or B & W

Exactly Antonio. With film visualizingthe photograph was very important. You either used B&W or color film and very often you exposed with the end result in mind. Digital creates a lot of new options, but also kind of postpones the permanent moment of a photograph. With film it was definite. B&W...

Lightroom 3 "publishing" to Flickr, Smug Mug, etc & "republishing" effects here.

That also happens when you replace a photograph on flickr. It has nothing to do with Lightroom, but the way flickr operates. When uploading a photograph it produces smaller versions too and these will all get their own url. When you replace a photograph, for instance from Lightroom, it needs to...

    Critique Wanted Color or B & W

Not so fast Antonio. Maybe you didn't read my question. You know tried to figure out what worked best in post-processing, but did you have a B&W or color photograph in mind when you took it? All too often I think people use B&W as a solution to fix a photograph that didn't work to well in color...

    A Wish for Simplicity

Do you mean that when I want simplicity I should get a RF or SLR film camera, because you feel perfectly fine with aperture mode on your digital cameras and therefore disagree with me?
  20. Wouter Brandsma

    Critique Wanted Color or B & W

Depends on what you had in mind Antonio. You took it as color, keep it in color. If you took with B&W in mind (of course at the moment when you took the photograph) keep it B&W. Of course digital photography is a wonderful thing with many opportunities, but also kind of gives something...

    Contradiction

Maybe that sort of snobbery has more to do with a form of justification. If you buy a 5D mark II to replace your m4/3 camera it should be better, because they are not in a similar price range. And since technical image quality is easier to measure that is what they talk about. However, a new or...

    Contradiction

Like you I only print large (A3 or A2 sized), but only look at 50%. That gives me a good assumption of how the print might look like in terms of texture and sharpness. And (don't tell my friends) I very often use jpegs instead of RAW's for that without any hesitation.
  23. Wouter Brandsma

    Contradiction

Yes, cameras are tools and that is I think also best to describe them. Not the camera, but the photographs makes you a photographer in my opinion.
  24. Wouter Brandsma

What cameras have you "connected" with and why?

For me it still is the Ricoh GR1 (film). When I saw a first preview in a German magazine I knew that this was going to replace my Nikon SLR set. Used it for 13 years. When it comes to digital I still think the Ricoh GX100 was my most special compact camera. Currently I have the GRD3 which is...

    A Wish for Simplicity

It could do the trick Terry, but I would have loved to see such a camera with a viewfinder. And I go as far to say that an EVF is getting pretty good too (I really liked the Ricoh GXR EVF). And I guess I never should have tried Cam's M8 last year.

    A Wish for Simplicity

I think the X1 is a pretty simple camera and I can only hope that Leica will continue to produce more of these cameras.

    A Wish for Simplicity

With regard to the Sigma I have been excited about that camera for a little more than a month. It is a simple camera with amazing image quality, but I and the DP1 are not the best friends. I don't mind to slow down, but I don't like slow cameras. It just doesn't want to be used as a tool to make...

    A Wish for Simplicity

It is wonderful to see this one year old article still being appreciated. And I still believe in every word I said. I use a Ricoh GRD3 that I appreciate because of the customizability, but the only reason is that it enables me to use the GRD3 as my film GR1. I photograph with a 10D that I use...

    Contradiction

In the great amount of reviewed cameras and 100% crops you would almost forget that these cameras are actually produced to take photographs. I mean, the family stuff, your vacations, personal projects (be it landscape, abstract, street, whatever), real world photographs. Sure, as a result of all...

    A Wish for Simplicity

This website is dedicated to the serious usage of compact cameras, including serious compact cameras. Now I am not going to redefine "serious compact" since many, including me, feel good about the current definition. But I want to share some of my thoughts on the state of current compact cameras...
