Infrared Gear The higher-end Kolari conversion filters -- worth it?

Thanks. I'm trying to find someone who has had the higher-end conversion done, who might say, "Best extra $150 I ever spent" or "I can't actually see much difference" or something in-between. UPDATE: It is moot. The Kolari conversion would have been $425 and just now I found a black X-E2...

Infrared Gear The higher-end Kolari conversion filters -- worth it?

If it cost me more that $12,000 to shoot infrared, I would not shoot infrared! I don't have any 590 now, except an external filter for my X100, which won't take a white balance so screw it. My goal isn't to see how much money I can spend. The recent acquisition of a 14mm Fuji used up much of...

Infrared Gear The higher-end Kolari conversion filters -- worth it?

If things go according to plan, I'll be sending my 720nm X-E2 off to Kolari this week to get made into a 590nm camera. And as I go through the options, I see that there are three levels of filter offered: an "industry standard uncoated filter" IR conversion, an IR conversion that is said to have...

Infrared Gear The Meike 25mm f1.8 and infrared

By the way, the little Meike is no slouch in visible-light photography, either. Here's a 100 percent crop of a multiflora rose I shot in the woods yesterday. I believe it was shot at f5.6 but would not stake my life on it, because the shooting discipline is something like this: open lens wide...

Infrared Gear The Meike 25mm f1.8 and infrared

I'm starting to think that 590 may be the sweet spot for color. (And I am wondering whether some lenses that are troublesome at 720 are less so with 590.) You may find 850 really tantalizing, as I do. Though this morning I started thinking about selling a couple of Fujinons to raise money for...

Infrared Gear The Meike 25mm f1.8 and infrared

It's a hoot. I began playing with it when I put a cheap 720nm (IR72 in cheap filter nomenclature), on my X100, taking white balance off the nice green grass, and shooting merrily away, then doing color swap and such in The GIMP. So it's not expensive to try out.

Infrared Gear The Meike 25mm f1.8 and infrared

The Meike 25mm f1.8 arrived about an hour ago, and the first thing was to test it to see how well it did infrared photography. The answer is not perfectly but well enough to be entirely usable. The short version: it's just fine in infrared color up to f5.6, and in black-and-white up to f8 and...

Infrared Gear Cheap Chinese lenses and infrared?

Okay, everybody, we have some preliminary answers, which are neither as bad nor as good as could be imagined. I'll put up a series of test images in the Showcase. Gotta say that I love the 25mm f1.8 Meike, which is just right for an X-E. (Of course I put a good UV filter on it and a hood; I...

No offense taken, none at all. Glad you like them.

Infrared Gear 18-135 Fujinon and infrared

Thing is, I'd rather it be my choice -- and one picture with a pink middle might be innovative, but when that's all that comes from the lens it would get old, beginning with the second pink-bellied picture. Meanwhile, this morning I wondered about some of my other fixed focal length Nikkors and...

Infrared Gear 18-135 Fujinon and infrared

The Fuji lenses are inconsistent in their IR handling, with some notoriously bad performers -- the 10-24, 18-55, and 60 macro all come to mind -- and some supposedly excellent ones, such as the 14, the 35 f1.4, and the 55-200; I've found the last two acceptable. The big surprise is the 18-135...

Infrared Gear 18-135 Fujinon and infrared

For comparison, here is a picture I made a few minutes ago in a similar place in the woods and under similar conditions, using the same 720nm converted X-E2 body and same settings, but using an ancient (pre-AI!) 24mm f2.8 Nikkor. (And yes, it says 8mm, because I didn't go deep into settings and...

Infrared Gear 18-135 Fujinon and infrared

The 18-135mm Fuji zoom is reputed to be an excellent lens for shooting infrared. Indeed, that's the reason I purchased one. Many Fuji lenses suffer from fairly bad to truly awful "hotspots" that render them unusable in infrared photography, which is too bad, because Fuji bodies are readily...

Infrared Gear Cheap Chinese lenses and infrared?

Okay, in that there seems to be a dearth of information on the subject, I just ordered the 25mm f1.8 Meike (allegedly better QC than 7artisans) in Fuji mount with a UV filter and hood for $94 from Amazon (which unlike China takes returns if it's not up to expectations). I'll report back one way...

Infrared Gear Cheap Chinese lenses and infrared?

Greetings, everybody . . . I shoot a lot of infrared with my Kolari-converted X-E2 (720nm native, but I use an 850nm filter much of the time). And most of my Fuji lenses have from annoying to unbearable hotspots. Even the 18-135, which I got specifically for IR because it was said to be...
