Micro 4/3 Initial impressions of the GX85

I think the GX85 is a very good camera that becomes great because of the value proposition. I think the GX8 to GX9 was a mis-step for Panny, highlighted by the GX85 as a low-cost option. Next version needs to be a "best of" mash-up of those cameras.

    Micro 4/3 LX 100 ii

The worst thing is getting used to touch screen then going back to a camera that lacks it. How many frustrating pokes or swipes until you remember to use the buttons?

Micro 4/3 Important stuff I learned about the OM-D E-M5

Nice shots Jock. I think that Jay on the right is looking at you saying "I think Jock got a new lens". You have two great lenses there imo, and they are both somewhat underappreciated. The 17 was long-rumored to be soft, though I never saw it, and the mkII version of the 14-150 just gets...

    Micro 4/3 E-M10 as a fixed lens

I used a GF1 + 20/1.7 combo as a "poor man's X100" when that camera was still selling for $1000+. I like the idea of the E-M10 + 20 as a FL camera of sorts, but for me the X100 is impossible to beat for <$350 used. But I really love the look I get from the X100 (preferred it to the X100T) and...

    Micro 4/3 Well, this worked okay I think . . .

Jock, that looks good. How is the blanket? We bought one from Shutterfly for a gift. The images looked OK, but the blanket itself was ridiculously thin. I would not recommend them to anyone for that product.

Micro 4/3 One thing I donā€™t like about the LX100

Kind of annoying when the answer is "you need a cheaper/less high end camera". At least you can grab your FZ200 for those shots. I assume it provides hand held night in Scene Mode?

Micro 4/3 One thing I donā€™t like about the LX100

If you look at recent Panny models, the GH3, FZ1000, GX7 and G7 all have Scene Mode setting, which presumably means you can select hand held night. The GH4, GX8 and LX100 do not have Scene Mode setting. Maybe it is still there and just takes a menu dive to find it and turn it on? Not sure, as...

Micro 4/3 One thing I donā€™t like about the LX100

Jock, I am not 100% certain, but I don't think you can select hand held night shot on the LX100. You can on cameras with Scene Mode (I imagine your FZ200 has that), but the LX100 does not. One of the tradeoffs in making the LX100 an "enthusiast" level camera I suppose. In your example with iA...

Micro 4/3 Finally got a E-M5..Why did I wait so long!?!!?!

I reunited with the E-M5 a few weeks ago. Very good decision. Not the best camera available, or course, but for total value it is hard to beat (selling used for $350). Having said that, I am peaking at the E-M10. I do miss wifi, and some of the others features would be nice. I don't care so...

Micro 4/3 What hood for Oly 45mm f1.8

Steve, to give you a headstart on the next Olympus mystery, when you buy either the 12/2 or 17/1.8 and can't get it to auto focus it is probably because the snap to focus ring has been moved. Not sure what trips up more people, that or the ring on the 45. I know they have both gotten me...

Micro 4/3 Will the real LX100 please stand up?

Well Ray, the silver lining is that you can completely scratch it off your list and not even think twice about it. Better to be black and white on these things. Which it is not for me. After deciding the LX100 was not (yet) for me I really revisited my desire to ditch my interchangeable...

Micro 4/3 Will the real LX100 please stand up?

So, I rented an LX100 over the holidays. Didn't have quite as much time to shoot with it as expected, but enough to draw some conclusions. I suppose I still don't understand the folks who are on both ends of the scale about this camera. It is simply not as sharp as a prime on an m4/3s body...

Thank you Matt. Your comparison vs m4/3s gear is a great point of reference for me. I'm a big fan of the 17/1.8. I think it is underrated by many people.

Micro 4/3 Will the real LX100 please stand up?

Yep. Lensrentals conveniently has a 25% off deal over the holidays. Looks like I'll be "evaluating" an LX100 after Christmas rather than getting caught up on work and home projects like I had planned. :clap2:

Micro 4/3 Will the real LX100 please stand up?

I won't be. My goal was to elicit comments from the folks who have not reacted strongly to the camera, one way or the other. The famously silent majority. I think therein may lie the most accurate judgement about the camera. It is admittedly a long shot.

Micro 4/3 Will the real LX100 please stand up?

Sure, but what I want is a more convenient camera with only minimal reduction in IQ vs what I am used to with m4/3s. That's the point of this thread. User reports on that IQ vary pretty widely. I'm not asking anyone what I should do; just how the camera performs.

Micro 4/3 Will the real LX100 please stand up?

It seems to me that the LX100, more than most cameras, is a polarizing little beast. Some folks swear by it's image quality and seem to find it to be an irreplaceable piece of kit. Others seem to be convinced that it is soft, and that image quality is anywhere from average to kind of poor. I...

Wow, it's what many of us have been saying for a while (about the RX100m3 & G7X): The output will be more or less the same. Choose the camera that best matches your wants/needs.

Micro 4/3 The official I don't want the LX100 thread

There seems to be more than the normal amount of folks who are unimpressed by the image quality. I know, that is too general of a statement to be defensible, but it is the general impression I am coming away with after reading too many posts.

    Micro 4/3 OMD-EM5 or GX7

No doubt. There was an E-M5 + 12-50 + 15mm bodycap lens selling for $495 on FM a week ago. Might still be for sale for all I know. I've seen a few bodies only under $400. I don't recall many screaming bargains on the GX7 as of yet.

Micro 4/3 Cameralabs detailed review of LX100

That Canon is so ignored it's not funny. The LX100 costs more, with a somewhat even tradeoff of features and capabilities vs the G1XMKII. But the Panasonic has been hailed as the second coming, while the Canon is treated like just another Canon.

Micro 4/3 Panasonic LX100!!!! Money is flying from my credit card!

I'm with you. And no touch screen either! I guess Panny wanted to hit a price point. I wish they would offer a "full feature" version for whatever they need to charge.

Micro 4/3 Panasonic LX100!!!! Money is flying from my credit card!

Good review. Like Biro I've been more forgiving about the shortcomings I see with the LX100 (flash; touch; tilt) lately. It would be great if Panny allows customization of the iA and Filter buttons via firmware, but I don't think their history indicates they will.

Steve, I'm curious to hear how you like the GX7 vs the E-M5, especially if you just sometimes shoot JPEGs. $715 is a sweet deal for that combo.

Micro 4/3 The official I don't want the LX100 thread

Two different uses for me. A crappy on board flash has no shot at taking the place of OCF. But, I do find myself using it occasionally for fill flash, or to just get a shot that is otherwise too dark to capture. Not serious stuff, but more in the snapshot genre.

Micro 4/3 The official I don't want the LX100 thread

I think that has been true of the mid level and lower models, but the GHs have held their own, and the GX7 did as well, I think. I'll be surprised to see the LX100 do a nosedive, unless someone one ups it in the short term (which seems unlikely).

Micro 4/3 Panasonic LX100!!!! Money is flying from my credit card!

Biro, you are speaking for me 100% as well (except about the Fuji as a second choice ) No flash; no deal. I wanted flip and touch screen, but they are negotiable. Flash is not.

Micro 4/3 No Love for the New Panasonic GM5?

Well, for me, the attraction of the LX100 is getting that classic zoom range at F/1.7 - 2.8, and not needing the other lenses. Getting less range at F/3.5 - 5.6 does nothing to motivate me.

Micro 4/3 Panasonic LX100!!!! Money is flying from my credit card!

Yep, the more I think about I conclude that it's a deal-breaker for me. I'd happily pre-order the LX100 to replace my E-P5 kit, but that goofy little flash is going to stop me. I feel kind of stupid saying that. I'm not a big flash guy, but having it for fill flash, or when you just need it...

Hogan's post is lacking, imo. Mirrorless sales are up, well beyond shipments, so yeah, the price/body is up. But what are a lot of those bodies? Sony A7s, Fuji XT1s, Panasonic GH4s, Olympus E-M1s. All of those cameras offer step changes in capabilities. I think we are getting a lot more...

Micro 4/3 The official I don't want the LX100 thread

I'd trade the hotshoe for a flash. RX100m3 gets it right for me. I'd rather see the LX100 be full on size of the G1XmkII and have a flash and flip screen and maybe a longer lens (if physically possible). Maybe I'm just talking myself out of spending $900...

While I'd like to pay less for these things I can't agree that they are overpriced. We're seeing innovation from these companies. It's not free. They will command a premium until the market catches up.

Micro 4/3 The official I don't want the LX100 thread

I'm with you on the screen and flash. A top-end camera without a flip screen is a miss for me. And the lack of on board flash is even worse. I'd buy the LX100 for ultimate simplicity. Having a separate flash unit to worry about kind of kills that.

Micro 4/3 Panasonic LX100!!!! Money is flying from my credit card!

Yeah, sure looks like it. I was really hoping and believing the X30 would've jumped to a 1" sensor. $600 for <1" doesn't seem defensible at this point.

Micro 4/3 I think the time has come to let go

Interesting thread. I was out of m4/3s, through a couple of Xs with Fuji and an NEX, and a FF Canon. Back to the E-M5 for a third time, but hopefully a bit wiser. 45/1.8 + 17/1.8 + 12-50. May add the 75-300, but that's it for me. Still keeping a modest DSLR kit for sports (mostly because...

Micro 4/3 So...Are we liking the GF6? Post your thoughts.

I think most of us look at these new Panasonic offerings and add six months to the release date and take at least half off the price and just start from that point when considering a purchase. Not sure how they compel anyone to buy one right out of the chute?
