I just found a rare reasonably priced used Nikon 17-28. It looks nicer in Nikon trim. It seems smaller and lighter than I remember it in it's native Tamron form. I'm getting lazier in my fade out of youth and I just haven't had the urge to mount the little Viltrox 20 and 28SE since I've received...
Thanks for the mention on the VB-30 battery. I didn't realize it was backwards compatible. Was looking for a backup for my V850iii. And congrats on the V1Pro. Quite a unit.
@Charzes44
I found a used one at BH. It was $65USD instead of $89. But that was dumb luck as I couldn't find one in stock. If there was, I'd gladly have paid full price.
Is your comment directed at the price of a flash remote or the difference between it and the other transmitters in the...
I picked up a Tap and Dye Classic (5/8" wide) leather strap in a 30" length. I don't wear shoulder straps on my neck, shoulder or cross shoulder but just with a wrap or two around my wrist or fore arm. I do often throw it around my neck for a lens change and the length works well for that. The...
That arrived in good time.
I'm glad you like it. My version 4 had a an under-developed tripod screw channel. It didn't allow the screw to fold in flush. My 4.5 is better but like yours. I figured that it wasn't a finished version, so I didn't mention it. I think I may carefully take a dremel to...
In both V4 (prototype) and V4.5 (my gifted version - latest?) there was an ever so slight amount of flex in the top of the finger grip area when rotating the camera vertically. Not apparent with lenses like the 40mm but with the 24-200. I think it's a limitation of the material and structural...
I'm glad you found the site. It really is on another level in regards to comfort and control compared to both the Nikon and Smallrig grips. My addition to the design was the bottom strap slot. I mentioned that I like attaching my PD wrist strap to the Smallrig grips in that manner to keep it out...
@mpeterson
Nice Mark. Really enjoying mine.
The Metro grip arrived today. Here's a few pics of the three. Not the best work but hopefully easy to see.
Nikon, Metro and Smallrig.
Metro, Smallrig and Nikon.
Nikon, Metro and bare as the Smallrig is front only.
The Smallrig is great and helps the Z f handle quite a bit. And I don't feel bad about adding the ZF-GR1 b/c the Smallrig was so affordable.
Has your Z f arrived? How do you like it?
I pickled up a used ZF-GR1 from Japan. Shipped f a s t !. Arrived on the fourth day.
The front finger grip isn't as sticky or as big as the Small-rig but the solidity and the rear thumb gives a better feel overall imo. Looks amazing too.
I also have a Metro grip (free - I trialed a prototype...
My X100V experience has led me to a Z fc. It's not as refined in the tasks that really suit the Fuji but succeeds at least partially in that regard and adds quite a bit of versatility. I added the 12-28 and 24 1.7 which I like. There's also a synergy with my FX-Z lenses.
An unexpected positive...
My V arrived with an intermittent "stick" in the shutter. It's on its way back to the seller. Unfortunate but possibly beneficial for me. In the brief time that I had it, I realized that I don't really have a use case for it. It's pretty and makes great images but I think a small-ish ILC could...
I got an itch and preordered a X100 6. After finding out the supply numbers of the first order (BH, Adorama and local online) and contemplating the improvements vs. the shuffle of 5s going on right now I cancelled it and found a nicely priced black 5. I had one early on but sold it, and...
Well written Matt.
My Viltrox 20 arrived. The size is charming. It's amazingly competent for its price. A really nice addition to my prime kit (20, 28, 40 and 85) and allows for a nice range of lengths with easy carry in a small bag.
A quick first shot.
I like this analysis, Andrew. Especially the stark comparison between Panasonic and Olympus. Sony and Pentax 100%. And Nikon and Canon having a bit of balance but definitely on each side.
My take anyway.
Nikonite here too.
I did the D50 >>>>> D700 before going mirrorless with mFT.
Probably the two bodies listed were the most fun.
The D50 because of the entry to ILCs and narrow DOF and the D700 from its sheer awesomeness.
Speaking of soft shutter release buttons. Actually a (p)re-acquisition. I bought it for a silver X-T5 but ended up with a titanium instead. Threw the red in a box and forgot about it, until the Z f. Looks better on an all black body imo.
I really like Viltrox lenses.
The 13 and 75 I tried were excellent. The 56 1.4 very good. This little 20 seems like a perfect match with the 28 and 40. I actually placed an order on their website just now. Not sure if it's in stock or not. Didn't say. $145 shipped. Might be a while though...
Was really looking forward to the 20. Great news.
I tried the 85 DF DSMii on dxomark's stellar rating and it was excellent and small. Looking forward to your findings and images.
Another couple of honorable mentions.
Definitely not as refined but still may suit you - shaving a few $ or ounces or maybe both.
Sigma 90 - Samyang 75. The Sigma 90 is a jewel. I love the build. The Samyang 75 is feather light and sharp.
CV 15 - Pergear 14. The CV15 is another jewel. The...
The Sony 20mm 1.8 is a great lens. I enjoyed using it on my classic C.
Also take a look at the little Viltrox 20 2.8. $158 new and it seems to be competent and nicely sized for the Cs.
I can't wait for it to come out for my Z f.
I used to use third party batteries with the logic that the materials and design are very similar if not the same. It's the QC of the OEMs that make the difference.
USB charging is nice and hopefully will become universal.
Thanks Chris. I think the refinements are well done.
The creature comfort level is really nice.
That speaks words as I know you shoot with the EOS R system. I really enjoyed the R5 files.
A7R5. I wanted it for the MRAW. The EVF is wonderful but was already very good. IBIS feels like it's caught up with the other players. I haven't really played with the AF but am eager to try - eye AF is sticky and accurate.
What I didn't realize but am pleasantly surprised.
It feels a little...
I bucked my usual trend of primes only in my kit and added the Tamron's 20-40 and 70-180.
Some brief quick testing is showing excellent acuity throughout the zoom range and apertures for both.
The 20-40 is wonderfully sized. And I can see the range being more useful than the 17-28.
As I get...
