Fuji A return to older ways with Fujifilm X10

The X10 has been my favorite compact camera since I got mine (shortly after it came out) but some time ago I missed a couple potentially great shots due to some erractic AF issues and haven't used it that much since.

Lovely series, Tony. I was editing some of my X-Trans shots minutes before I've seen yours and yeah, can't confuse those colors with anything else out there ;)

Fuji Difficulty with Xpro2 raw files and opinions needed.

I've been shooting X-Trans cameras for a couple years now and second what most folks and reviewers perceive - there's a certain 'Fuji look' and it's not only about the colors or the glass. I don't care too much for SOOC jpgs, no matter what brand, have tried most of the available RAW converters...

    Fuji X100S vs X100T

I've had both and indeed found the T to be somewhat snappier than the S, especially in low-light situations but to me it was still far from ideal. In situations without enough contrast to lock AF I often had to revert to MF to get the shot and even though MF works somewhat better on the T than...

Fuji just a few test shots

I've tried it for a short while and was kinda OK with it - far from ideal but not necessarily more fiddly than pressing the Fn button on my X-Pro1 and picking the right ISO from the menu with the up/down buttons on the control pad (yawn). On the Sonys I can change the ISO via control wheel - way...

Fuji just a few test shots

Lovely set, Luke. Agreed on the over-the-top retro design of that ISO dial but since the Fuji gives you some pretty configurable Auto-ISO I wouldn't give too much of a damn. (I shoot my Fujis on Auto-ISO most of the time.)

Fuji X-T1 GAS attack #2 (the me also thread)

I've had the 17/1.8 on an EM5 but vastly prefer the rendering of either the 23/2 on my X100s or 23/1.4 Fujinon (haven't tried the new 23/2 so far).

I've had the sensor replaced by Fuji and no issues with orbs since then. Some weeks ago though the zoom function of my OVF stopped working correctly, everything looks fine at the wide end but starting at around 35mm equiv. it doesn't follow the lens anymore. Having that fixed will probably cost...

Fuji New to the Fuji Experience

I'm a big fan of rawtherapee but not so much for X Trans files. You might want to check out PhotoNinja. It's one of the better RAW converters for X Trans RAFs out there, especially when it comes to critical details and their highlight recovery keeps getting better and better with every new...

Fuji New to the Fuji Experience

I second Ray, a nice compact lens, pretty sharp in the center, even wide open, with good colors, contrast and microcontrast but some distortion and field curvature issues as well as relatively soft borders and corners that never get really sharp - nothing for landscapes or architecture, but...

Thanks, Dale, it's one of my favorite hangouts. Christopher Columbus used to live 200 meters from here before he set sail for 'India' and before I forget it, Brad Pitt is filming just 50 meters around the corner this month.

I've had the chance to try a good number of compact cameras during the last couple years, among them all four incarnations of the RX100 and the X20/X30 and I'm still stuck with the bl..dy X10, can't help it, lol. Regarding the RX100 1-2-3-4, before I'd dish out the cash I've yet to try a copy...

Fuji DPReview Test of Fuji X70

To me it seems somewhat strange that they rated the RAWs below the jpgs in the scoring graph, from what I remember it's the first time they did that for an X-Trans camera and I can't recall any other of their camera reviews where they've done something alike. Like so often they've mentioned...

That's what calibrated monitors are there for in the first place - displaying the truest possible colors and values on a screen - think of a reference or norm - no need to look anywhere else if you want to play it safe. There's no such thing as an average xyz display since uncalibrated displays...

Like I've said, it's a 100% center crop of a (rather boring) test image. Here's a downsized 1400px image of the original RAW conversion I've taken it from. The exposure (WB, colors, contrast, tonal distribution, ...) looks absolutely OK to me on my calibrated Dell monitor, Dale. It's not the...

Some more test stuff - for the records and my new printer :) I'm not much of a pixel-peeper but here's a central 100% crop of a pretty straight RAW conversion in LR with careful multi-pass low-radius sharpening afterwards - about as far as I'd go before it starts looking artificial. That's...

Just a little B&W close-up converted from RAW with a 150% crop below. This stuff prints just beautifully and can be blown up as large as any 35mm B&W negatives from back in the day - pretty much as large as you like. To me carefully processed B&W prints from the X10 actually look better than...

    Fuji X10 Pictures

For me it's mainly because the X10 is my first compact camera that does almost everything I need as long as I don't need shallow DOF and larger than A4 color prints (for critical usage). The B&W images from the X10 are about on par with what I used to get out of 35mm B&W film back in the day ...

I had some situations in the last 4? years with this camera where it had a really hard time focusing or focused somewhere outside of the AF frame, mostly in low- or backlight situations. Couldn't agree more. I've got the X-Pro1 and some fine glass for it but use the kit lens for almost everything most of the time; it's that great. Amen to that! Not one of my favorite photographers is known for mere technical aspects of his work (sharpness/resolution, razor thin DOF, ...) and most of my all time favorite images could have been captured with an X10 without losing any of their essence and impact whatsoever. Nothing against...

I mainly shoot RAW but even if I take the larger Fuji or the NEX and some fine glass out for a walk, the X10 is always there and I often spontaneously grab it for candid shots because of its 'special' files. No regrets so far.

I certainly like the color of the X10 jpgs (Provia) a lot better than those from my X-Pro1. Resolution wise there's not much to gain by shooting RAW with the X10 but I like to play with those 12 bits in post. What I do miss from the X20 is the somewhat more reliable AF system and of course the...

Thanks for the kind feedback Steve and Kevin! I guess special says it, Larry. I still use mine an awful lot for casual shots of people like this one, even in bad light. Lightroom does a pretty decent job on the RAWs, even L sized @12MP (well, sort of), but the jpgs ain't that bad either. I...
