What books are you reading for pleasure these days?

Almost done with another book, an amazing "Free Little Library" score called "Stand Up That Mountain." If you're a fan of environmental advocacy, trout fishing, the Appalachian Mountains, etc, this is riveting. I have absolutely been hooked to it, every night. Book: Stand Up That Mountain...

What books are you reading for pleasure these days?

Almost done with this one. It's fantastic, as long as you don't mind some deepish dives into the engineering. Sad timing with Mike Collins' recent passing. But an all-around fascinating story, very engrossing. https://www.amazon.com/Rocket-Men-Epic-Story-First/dp/0143117165

    Question for the audiophiles

One of those friends took a gorgeous walnut console TV with one of those "rolling" waterfall fronts where the front panel covering the TV slides to the side and bends around the corner to disappear. He gutted the old TV out of it and fitted a nice new little flat screen in there. Still has it. I...

    Question for the audiophiles

Once upon a time in Cambridge, Mass… We lived next to an abandonned property right in the middle of everything, with several empty houses and an empty in-ground pool filling with tree debris and stagnant water. I could see rotting wallpaper through the windows. After a few years, a wrecking...

Still standing: a report from one of the wildfires in the Pacific Northwest

And one quick story: Just outside Detroit OR is a wonderful natural hot spring facility that we have visited 3 times since we moved here. It abuts a flowing river, there’s a massive main lodge for dining, there's a hiking path out among the huge old trees, then there is a grid of tiny old 1-room...

Still standing: a report from one of the wildfires in the Pacific Northwest

We haven’t had much of a direct fire threat, this particular go-round, where I live. There were two smallish fires close to town a month ago, but they were able to knock them down and contain them fairly quickly – this is before the massive fires started south of Mt Hood near Detroit, OR, so I...

Still standing: a report from one of the wildfires in the Pacific Northwest

Hey folks. All is well (enough) here. Thanks for thinking of me. Quick report to follow.

    Pahk the Cah

Our beloved, rowdy local bike shop has a party every year for the super bowl in the shop, while hosting both a chilli cook-off, and a corn bread cook-off. So we tent to SEE the superbowl, but we could not care much less about it if we had to. Thus, I may see some of these as they air, but I'm...

Some Graphs Just Make It Clear

Two things... THING ONE - Sorry/not sorry to nit pick, but using two different scales (really splitting these into 2 different axes, period) is bull$ht. It makes me angry, because it’s needless manipulation of the viewing audience. They’ve made two curves look to be of similar size, ostensibly...

Bike people, is this any good?

No - run away. Heavy, budget spec, essentially a 30 year old bike -- but made MUCH worse than bikes were made 30 years ago. Nothing redeemable on that bike.

    Travel kit

(weather proofing the 50-230) For this weekend's kids triathalon event, with solid rain in the forecast (light sprinkles for 10 mins in reality), I took a clear plastic bread bag about 10" long, cut a slit in the sealed end that was just barely big enough to wedge the lens hood through, then...

You’re already there, so in this specific case it’s academic. But for the general question, I’ll say… 1. You specifically are good enough (as in, you know how to use that equipment to get things done) that you could make whatever you brought work, including just the XE3 and 1 lens… any one of...

Help! Someone wants to buy my photos.

It did indeed pan out. They added a photo, and I wound up at $100 a shot for unlimited use. That's a good price for them, and I'm happy.

For the 'Bike Crew', do you guys use any apps when riding?

The two big ones are Strava, and RideWithGPS. Strava has a free option, which is probably exactly what you want. The big attraction for most users of it is the social aspect, which I suspect you would hate. The super fit guys use it to see who else has done that route, how fast. They check up...

Help! Someone wants to buy my photos.

I managed to get my friend on the phone, who is a professional sports photographer. Interesting: normal rates currently for clothing / equipment companies for web/social use is $150-250 per image. People with shallower pockets, like the ones looking to license these 3 from me, it's usually more...

Help! Someone wants to buy my photos.

A tourism agency found some of my photos on my wife's website, and is inquiring about buying some for their advertising. Which is awesome, of course. But ... I've never done THIS this, not exactly like this. What's a fair price, and how do we document it?

Regarding the 23 1.4: I had it, and wanted to love it badly, but never did. Had it for ~ 3 years, and shot it a ton. I've made good with the rokinon 12mm, 18-55, 27 pancake, 35 1.4, 56, 50-230, Minolta 55... just never got to a place where I "got" the value proposition of that big 23. Huge...

    50-230 vs 55-200 vs 50-140

I mean... yes the 50-140 is in all aspects (other than max reach) a better tool for everything, no question. But let us not so casually dismiss the 50-230 as not fit for sports. KBRX3139P by gordopuggy, on Flickr KBRX1732 by gordopuggy, on Flickr And the times I brought it to a dark, indoor...

Going Old School - Purposefully Working In Manual Focus Lenses (Image Heavy)

I enjoy the shooting experience on XT1 + Rokinon 12 or Minolta 55 1.7 more than any of my AF lenses, most of the time. I'm with you. The AF lenses win when there are subjects changing distance constantly. Otherise, I love the direct drive of helical gears moving lens elements, and that the focus...

Should you instead decide to cut your current bars down, a standard pipe cutting tool that rotates around the pipe would work.

I've been on several rides with friends at the local intense trails, and on those twisty bits through the trees, they're swaying and ducking to get those massive flat bars around corners without hitting a grip on a tree. I have no such issues.

Yes.... yes the "baseball bat" bars, as I call them, are now the defacto standard on offroad bikes, unless they're drop bar dirt bikes. And I do -not- get it. I first ran across that brand when we did a guided tour for 6 days in Eastern Oregon. I rode one of their bikes, which came with a larger version of the BarKeep. So I had my Domke in it, always accessible, and for six days I was in heaven. I got home, and missed it.

Love that Roscoe. The tire size is a newish development, called "27 5 Plus", or "27.5+" on paper. Smaller diameter than the more common recent defacto 29" tires, but nice and chunky width to really hold traction well. Also a big fan of a 1x drivetrain, and hydraulic brakes, so yeah this is...
