Geez, it's good you're on top of your healthcare.

I had a stroke last night

Next you're going to tell us you accidentally went skydiving because you were trying to put your parachute in the washing machine. Definitely stay active but, you know, take the dog for a walk with a family member, do the dishes. Don't be working machinery 'n stuff. :-D

We won't tell her it was all part of an elaborate plan.

I had a stroke last night

    Ah, that splains everything.

I had a stroke last night

Geez man, I hope you do get to go home tomorrow. On the bright side, there are worse hospitals elsewhere in the world you could have found yourself in. Do you have a medical or other biomedical background? You're quite apt in understanding the circumstances of your healthcare and explaining...

I had a stroke last night

I think I completely misunderstood your circumstances - I thought you were being cared for at home while you recover, I didn't realise you were at the hospital the whole time (or partially at home some of the time?).

    Wear those scars with pride.

I had a stroke last night

No I meant if you get desperate enough to invite a quasi-stranger like me into your home. I could bring a couple of board games that you and your family would enjoy.

Crashed the car on the weekend.

Ah there you go, the sign had been there the whole time.

I had a stroke last night

That is good to hear, I was going to ask if you need me to do anything to assist. Let me know if you get real bored and want to meet up and talk photography or whatever else.

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I had to drive past it twice today, in the rain. There was a sign actually, it was one of these with the words "WHEN WET" underneath: I don't know if it's been there the whole time or if it's new.

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I would not be surprised at all if that happened. The local council isn't the most competent.
  14. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

No sign except for the absolutely crappy small sign warning about the busted railing which no one will see until they're already crashing into it. It doesn't cost the council anything to fix the railing each time because they claim it from the crash victim's insurance. They didn't have to...

This is where I missed that you're local.

Crashed the car on the weekend.

So ... I drove past that spot a few weeks ago and the local council finally fixed the road railing that was all busted up. And.... I drove past it again yesterday and saw that the road railing was busted up again, in the same spot, in the same way. Looks like somebody crashed their car very...

Music The Amazing Emporium of Wondrous Tunes (aka: What are you listening to?)

Montgomery Church ... is not a church in a place called Montgomery. It's a Country & Western duo who hail from rural Australia - Cielle Montgomery and James Church. I stumbled on to them when they were playing/busking somewhere a few years ago. Really fantastic world-class songwriters/musicians.

Crashed the car on the weekend.

For anyone checking it out - the circle is the gentle bend I'm referring to and the X is where my car ended up. But yes it is downhill until that even more pronounced bend further up.

Crashed the car on the weekend.

See this is the kind of thing that scares me about driving in snowy or muddy or very heavy rain conditions.
  21. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

That would be insane. On the occasion I was describing above, I was driving very slowly maybe walking pace, 20km/h max. This is a photo I took of the conditions:
  22. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I guess it depends on the conditions. In snow conditions up in the snow fields approx 45min drive from where I live, my AWD did a fantastic job where 2WD faltered. But I can imagine in other countries where snowfall is a lot heavier, having a 4WD will only assist a tiny, tiny bit.
  23. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I should clarify that the road gradient in parts of my neighbourhood can be around 20% (and apparently 35% down some of the lesser accessed side streets). https://theclimbingcyclist.com/climbs/mt-dandenong/terrys-avenue/
  24. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I know, I know. I was just misunderstanding the difference between a manual car vs an automatic car. With the manual car, I knew how to work the gears to control the car but with an auto car which (I assumed) was always forward pushing, I didn't know how it worked.
  25. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I have definitely learned this from you in this thread. The only thing that prevents me from following through with this newfound knowledge is my lack of budget to buy the right car. :-D
  26. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I am old enough to remember when cars didn't come with ABS. I had ingrained in me to perform impulse braking (if I understand it correctly) in emergency braking situations. I also drove manual cars for a couple of decades and there were at least one or two occasions when I've used the gears...

Crashed the car on the weekend.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks very much for explaining that. It sounds like TC does have some utility. The person at the car dealership said TC takes over the steering wheel and points the car in the right direction. That gave me some concerns.... Re my Mazda CX7 - as I understand it...

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I watched this - very informative but also a lot for me to take in. I have no idea what kind of tyres are on my car, but I have to say that we don't ordinarily have snow here unless we drive up to the mountains to the ski fields.
  29. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I had a chat with my neighbour yesterday, they know someone who lives on the street where I crashed the car. Their friend said that that stretch of road claims at least 2 cars a week during the winter period.
  30. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

Thanks for that. I used to drive a manual car and I would have kept the car in gear but I was never sure about automatic cars because there's always a forward push which makes no sense if I was going downhill. It comes down to a lack of knowledge on how the gear engineering works I guess. I...

Crashed the car on the weekend.

What scares me is that I cannot see anything wrong with that part of the road where the crash happened. Absolutely nothing. I'll just explain again why it was such a confronting experience - I was simply driving like normal, at a normal speed, I was not driving recklessly. As I was going...
  32. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

Reading some of the posts here about tyres, it seems that what I assume about the width of the tyres goes against my intuitive expectations. I always thought that the wider the tyres, the better the grip on the road. And also - I'm not really seeing any real advantage in a car with 'traction...

Crashed the car on the weekend.

It's pretty much at the corner of Belgrave-Hallam Rd and Park Drive. You can see how gentle that bend is. I have no idea about the road surface and in fact I didn't realise there were that many types of road surfaces. It just looks like regular tar?

Crashed the car on the weekend.

Thanks everyone for your messages of support and well wishes. I posted some photos in the Birds In Flight thread - if anyone wants to start a Cars In Flight thread, I could post a photo of my car because I'm sure it was airborne for a few seconds after it smashed into and over the curb.
  35. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

It's up in the Yarra Ranges so it's not unusual to find some minor debris on the road, although in this case I don't remember seeing anything, the heavy rain would have washed everything away I would've thought.
  36. TraamisVOS

Crashed the car on the weekend.

It definitely wasn't oversteer - I was going downhill and around a gentle bend (and I wasn't speeding either). I think I was gently turning the wheel but it had already lost traction. The loss of traction was very very subtle at first when I noticed that the car wasn't quite pointing in the...

Crashed the car on the weekend.

Wish I could take you up on that advice but the Subarus are pretty expensive in these parts. My other car is an AWD and it's not let me down yet. I do remember taking it for a drive up to the snows and I could feel the AWD switching on and keeping the car going straight (I was driving at...

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I'm sure hydroplaning had something to do with it. It was initially a very subtle loss of traction.

Crashed the car on the weekend.

That sounds like a decent explanation of what happened with me because I could not see what I did wrong and there was nothing obvious on the road. It sounds like you went through pretty much the same thing I did. Good to know you survived it well enough!

Crashed the car on the weekend.

I'm not sure if they did but I think I got a lot of goodwill from them based on the fact that this was a notorious spot.

Crashed the car on the weekend.

Thanks Irene. In my opinion, the car is totalled. The damage doesn't look too bad in the photos but the panel damage to the left hand side of the car would be too expensive to fix. Also, when the car crashed through the curb and the railing, there was quite a bit of damage underside of the...

Crashed the car on the weekend.

It had been raining heavily. I was going downhill on a road that I had travelled on many times. I wasn't speeding but as I was going around the gentle bend I started to feel the car lose traction for whatever reason. The car skidded sideways for maybe 100+ metres(?), smashed through the road...

POTN is Closing - Welcome POTN'ers curious about Cameraderie

I'm a jazz hound, my principal instrument is the piano. But there two other instruments in the world of jazz that I have a tremendous love for and wish I had technical proficiency - the double bass and the trumpet. That's all I wanted to say.

What game are you playing or looking forward to play?

Oops, maybe it's a twice-ish more expensive than the Switch in Australia, not 3-4 times more. The last time I checked for Deck pricing was last year when it was really not available in Australia yet so the prices were inflated plus shipping...
  46. TraamisVOS

What game are you playing or looking forward to play?

I 'm already sold on the Deck, in fact I have had a Steam account for more than a decade and have 279 games in my account catalog. The only problem is the price, it's a hell of a lot more than the Switch in Australia. And it's also not available in Australia anyway.
  47. TraamisVOS

What game are you playing or looking forward to play?

Thanks to you both for the comprehensive explanation. I'm not really a tech head so a lot of the tech talk has gone over my head. I'm really interested in the Deck though but they're 3 to 4 times more expensive than the Switch. I'm not too fussed about screen size IF I'm playing a familiar...

What game are you playing or looking forward to play?

What's the difference between the Steam deck vs the Nintendo Switch (other than the catalog of available games)? They're essentially the present day version of the Gameboy (or the Game-N-Watch even further back) isn't it - both are handheld gaming consoles.
  49. TraamisVOS

What game are you playing or looking forward to play?

To be honest, I really don't enjoy the tech progression and base management aspects of XCom. All I want to play is the tactical missions. Give me the loadout, let me take on the invading enemy. The weird thing is - the XCom proprietary board game completely drops the tactical missions and...

Music The Amazing Emporium of Wondrous Tunes (aka: What are you listening to?)

No, because: https://cameraderie.org/threads/the-amazing-emporium-of-wondrous-tunes-aka-what-are-you-listening-to.11909/post-566656 Also, the spotify page for 'JajaJazz' doesn't appear to be a band, it's some kind of radio channel that collects various jazz songs together from other sources.
