    Remarkable Motorcycles

I got to ride the new BMW R 1300 GS last October in Spain. First impressions - it's a great bike and a fitting standard bearer of the legendary GS name. For this photo, I followed closely behind a photographer leaning out of the backseat of a Mini Cooper convertible. I think he was shooting...

Humor Does anyone remember New Camera News?

In the beginning, it was like shooting fish in a barrel. But eventually I ran out of fish and things started to smell.

Humor Does anyone remember New Camera News?

Reminiscing about the camera parody site that I ran for a couple of years. It had it's 15 minute about 10 years ago when other websites started following it and people started posting links from it on other websites. Some people even called it The Onion of photography, which is about the biggest...

What are your thoughts on Mastodon? šŸ˜šŸ¤”

I just discovered that there is also a distributed, open-source, photo sharing platform, a la Instagram https://pixelfed.org/ I'm on there too now. https://pixelfed.social/i/web/profile/498440958472033844

What are your thoughts on Mastodon? šŸ˜šŸ¤”

Let's not forget that two of the most popular websites in the world (Wikipedia and Reddit) are still very much Web 1.0 and are supported by fairly unobtrusive ad/donation models. Maybe we're taking a step back to a simpler, kinder, web.

What are your thoughts on Mastodon? šŸ˜šŸ¤”

Like a million others, I joined an instance last week. Interested to see how it all shakes out. I like the distributed/non-corporate nature of it. At the end of the day, the value will be determined by the people there.

    Alternative Browsers to Chrome

FWIW, I've been using Edge on my desktop for about a month now (I still have Chrome on my laptop). They are practically indistinguishable from each other at this point. Edge picked up my history and passwords from Chrome quite easily. Edge may be slightly better at memory management but...

Why don't car windows have a safety feedback mechanism? (gross picture warning)

Oh my, that looks terrible, Jock. Glad it's on the mend. Somewhere in my distant memory I recall a car maker having windows with just the kind of safety mechanism that you're talking about. Nissan maybe? Or perhaps Mercedes.

    Contemplating my future

Oh man, Tony, so sorry to hear that you are so frustrated. I'm a motorcycle travel writer and photographer. Been doing it for nearly 15 years. It's a side hustle for me and has been both very challenging and fulfilling and has made me a better writer and photographer. PM me if you have any...

    Insta360 One X camera

Hmmm...I'll have to look into this new camera. Seems to follow the form factor of the Ricoh Theta, which makes sense because it works so well - I returned the Garmin 360 partially because of this. It will take more image quality improvement though for serious photogs and cinematogs to get...

    Mind game: mission-critical camera

Another vote for Pentax. Their APS-C cameras are tank-like. But another good option, especially if video is needed, is the Panny GH5 with the 12-35 and 35-100 F2.8 lenses

Some stuff I learned about photographing clouds yesterday

I like the idea of the tower on the horizon because it provides a sense of scale, particularly the second shot with the tower on the left. Your shots seem a little underexposed though, anywhere from a quarter to full stop, as if you are trying hard to avoid clipping any and all highlights. I...

Something personal and unrelated to photography.

Don't sweat it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The first time I went to the Philippines as an adult, I observed behaviors in my cousins - people I had never known - that seemed eerily familiar. It is kind of cool to see the balance between nature and nurture.

Yeah, Facebook is a bit like trying to sip wine through a firehose but I have managed to have some interesting conversations there with old friends that I might not otherwise interact with. Using an external monitor with the RX10.

FWIW, the Panasonic GX85 provides remote control and Live View via WiFi to an Android or iOS device. And it has a Focus Stacking mode where it will automagically focus stack for you. I haven't tried it yet so I can't say how effective it is. CameraLabs may have tested the feature though.

Interesting comment on The Online Photographer

As long as I can visualize what the resulting image will look like, I don't care whether it's an EVF or OVF or rear LCD. As an aside, I just got a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge with a stunning 5.5" Quad HD AMOLED display. It's got 534 pixels per inch, which actually exceeds a high quality print. When...
