On or off camera lighting and things

I was asked to recreate an album cover from the Rolling Stone top 50 album covers of all time. There's a single flash in one of those pop up disc "soft boxes". It was a Godox AD200 but any speedlight would have worked. It's close enough that it was in the frame. The black background made it easy...

On or off camera lighting and things

I posted this in the self portrait thread yesterday and thought some might be interested in how it’s lit. It’s really pretty simple. The main light is an AD200 with a grid to keep it tight and barn doors to further control any spill. It’s place directly to the side about four feet (1.25 meters)...

Thank you both. My wife and I cared for her mother for many years here at home. She passed at the end of October, a month after her 100th birthday. We’re still figuring out what our lives look like now, but the weight is gone.

I've had a very stressful 18 months and have been feeling very used up. GFX 50R w/Mitakon 85/1.2 ISO400 1/125s probably around f/8

Here’s another variation of lighting through the subject. Dead flowers arranged directly on the face of a softbox pointing straight up. It’s the light source and the background.

On or off camera lighting and things

Here’s another one that I’ve shared in one of the portrait threads. It was shot a few years ago when I participating in a workshop. I used two Godox v850’s. They’re up to a version 3 now and are a tremendous value. The main light is in a silver umbrella on camera right. The second, also in a...

On or off camera lighting and things

John’s hot apple made me think of this. I shot it in July during the One challenge. I used an AD200 with the bare bulb head on the floor pointed straight up. There’s a short length of pvc pipe fit over the bulb and the other end is cradled in my hands. It also lights my face. There’s another...

On or off camera lighting and things

There are a lot of great sources for learning to use and understand light. Some comprehensive, some piecemeal. The "good reason" this book has been used as a textbook is probably that it's published by a textbook publisher.

I found an old self portrait. Probably 1984, maybe 1985. Olympus OM-4, looks like it was probably the 24mm f/2.8 (maybe 35mm), Kodak Technical Pan film developed in Rodinal. Printed on my all time favorite paper, Agfa Portriga. It’s mounted on acid free foam core and looks exactly like the day...

I guess this qualifies as a self portrait although I really just consider myself to be the model in this one.

On or off camera lighting and things

This is a bit of an experiment. I’ve been feeling pulled in a lot of directions lately. A grid and barn doors on an AD200 fired four times during a one second exposure. Fractured

Long time ago. Maybe 1983. Super Graphic with an Ektar 127mm. Ektachrome 4x5 film. I don't remember the aperture or shutter speed ;)
