holy

"Holy, Holy, Holy!" is a Christian hymn written by the Anglican bishop Reginald Heber (1783–1826). Its lyrics speak specifically of the Holy Trinity, having been written for use on Trinity Sunday. The opening line (Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!) references Isaiah 6:3, Revelation 4:8 and mirrors the opening line of the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts) as found in the Book of Common Prayer. John Bacchus Dykes composed the tune Nicaea for this hymn in 1861. The tune name is a tribute to the First Council of Nicaea which formalized the doctrine of the Trinity in 325.In a poll conducted by the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, "Holy, Holy, Holy" was chosen as the greatest hymn of all time.
