Nikon Niko Coolpix P950 - cannot take macro photos of insects - camera will not focus on them

I bought the camera for my wife for her birthday. She photographs birds from a distance and plants & insects up close. When either of us try to focus on a spider in its web, all of the surroundings are pretty good, but the camera will not focus on the spider (even when it is absolutely still)...

I still love my very old and much used Nikon D2X and at 12 megapixels the sensor still can take a lot of cropping. These bee photos have been cropped quite a bit and still show well. I used the venerable Sigma 180mm 3.5 Macro lens for these shots today.

    Bugs Share The Fly

I know it's not what you expect but no, not THAT FLY .... These ones :P One step forward and one step back, we do the Hockey Pokey... I never realised how photogenic flies can be, normally I don't like them at all (nor my dog, their buzz is driving her nuts) Very shy, getting to close...

    Bugs Share The Beatles

Not these Beetles: But these kinds of beetles :P Under my green umbrella. Fell in a vegetarian ditch. Well covered. Making my entrance. Do you wanna race, Turbo? Don't mind me, I'm just passing through... well, passing on you.

    Advice Wanted camera for beginners?

Hello everyone, this is my first post on this forum. My son's birthday is coming up soon and I would like to give him his first camera. He likes to photograph nature and insects, can you recommend a beginner camera around $800?

Fuji Showcase Fuji XF 50 2.0

XF 50 on XT20. I also used ACR 9.9 on the RAW files and it did a great job.
