After five long years . . . finally published as a nature photographer . . . see also "patient endurance"

The theme of my early morning devotional last Wednesday was "patient endurance." I remember thinking: "doesn't sound like fun to me." At noon, coming back from a doctor's appointment, the better half says, "better check your messages." There is a call from an editor at The Conservationist...

    Panasonic Panasonic FZ1000 II

The rented FZ1000 II arrived this afternoon, and as the battery was already fully charged, I immediately loaded a card and headed out the door for a walk around the yard. It feels smaller than it looks in photos and simulations, and it took me a few minutes to figure out the AF spot setup. I...

Android Samsung S20 Ultra 10X Zoom Samples

Here are some sample images from my S20 Ultra. In each pair of images, I took a photo using the wide angle camera on my Samsung S20 Ultra and then repeated the same photo at 10X zoom (combination of 4X optical zoom and additional binning and cropping). These are straight out of the camera with...

    Sony Big old moon . . . fooling around with post-processing . . . RX10 Mk IV

Huge partial moon hanging in the sky this AM. Put the RX10 4 in full auto mode to see what it would do. Could hear it chattering away, making multiple images and stacking them. Got this: Put it in P mode and rolled in a bunch of minus exposure compensation: Ran it through DXO 9: Ran...

Here's a map of the ponds at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, NY: The map doesn't show the small island in the pond at the left, but here it is, complete with a small footbridge for access: And here's the attack: And here's where we think the offenders live: Now, I don't quite get why the...

Sony Sony RX10 Mk IV -- nice focus move

Normally when I go out for a stroll with the RX10 MkIV, I set it up in P mode with a central focus rectangle. Yesterday, while walking at Oakwood Cemetery, the spotter-in-chief points up and says "hawk." (She noticed it because of a shadow traversing the ground; she's uncanny like that.) I...

Sony RX10 MkIV -- Six months into the mission

In May, 2019, I purchased the Sony RX10 MkIV. It was a big leap for me, spending nearly two kilobucks on a camera . . . a non-trivial expenditure. Would it deliver what I needed or would I find myself, a month or two later, scouring the photo review sites, looking for the Next New Thing? I'm...

    A conversation about autumn leaves

About three weeks ago, the better half (aka spotter-in-chief) and I were marveling at the beauty of the autumn leaves . . . the beauty, variety, and intensity of the yellows, oranges, and reds . . . heart-breaking gorgeous. Then two questions occurred: (1) how come we don't see pink and what...

Fireworks video shot with RX10 IV

Shot off tripod. Trees obscured part of lower sky. Had troubles with getting slo-mo to work (note to self: bring small flashlight so you can see the dials!). Need to figure how to get faster autofocus lock-on, but still, pleased with initial result. All feedback welcome. Cheers, Jock

Sony Additional thoughts about the Sony RX10 IV

Progress report. There is a great deal to like about the Sony RX10 IV. The autofocus is the best Iā€™ve ever experienced; the Zeiss optics are superb; the fit and finish are excellent; it shoots both stills and video; the one-inch sensor is a serious step up from the small superzoom sensors I had...

    Sony RX10 IV initial impressions ā€“ long . . . youā€™ve been warned!

For years now, Iā€™ve had a mad, passionate love affair with superzoom cameras. I argue that they are, quite simply, the most versatile cameras on the planet: they will deliver 20-something millimeter equivalent wide angle views when you need them and yet, without changing lenses, draw you close...
