Looks like I'll get a lot of chances to shoot cyclocross races this year - the wife's joined a local team. Kickoff party and a practice was last night at this amazing house in the hills outside town between some orchards. They mowed and marked a grueling practice course. I took a lap on it for fun, and was pleasantly gassed when I got back to the keg of beer. They rode at dusk, and I brought the 23 f1.4 and 56 f1.2 lenses. I did NOT enjoy the results of the 23, man. It's so, so soft wide open. Reviewing the shots this morning on a big screen, I was unhappy with everything below f2, and even then it could've been a little better. The 56 just excelled. I find myself wanting to sell the 23 and try to turn it into the f2 travel version.

Enough grumbling. Shots:

The Mrs came dressed more for the party.

It was. It's also not what I had in my head before I got there. I was planning for enough light to get much closer to them and stop action with fast shutter speeds. But we all stood around talking and drinking beer too long before riding, and the light got super dim (and gorgeous). So I backed up and got a lot more scenery in the shots with them. Felt like a better use of what was available.
