The stonemason had recently completed work on my uncle’s headstone (not shown) so we travelled over to the cemetery this morning to check out his good work before making the final payment. I saw this headstone just as we were leaving - I thought a nice, safety shot!

I had hoped that I might get a cheerier picture afterwards at the nearby beach but when we arrived there my mum became suddenly very tired. I understood why. Her parents, brothers, husband and son now, reluctantly, call that cemetery home. Being there makes her feel empty inside. So instead of photos, we find a bench then just sit quietly for a time with our eyes closed. Soothed by the unexpected warmth of the October sun and by the sounds of the gentle waves rolling on to the sand. The happy, playful laughter and voices of people passing by rouse us once more into the land of the living as we call greetings back to them.

Still, no more photos today so safety shot it must be!
