Fuji 50mm f1 available for preorder

It’s now available for preorder at all of your favorite places to get gear from. Priced at $1499.95. As one would expect from a lens at that price, the performance looks like it lives up to the hype.

Cool shots. The sample gallery at DPR shows an overly clinical lens (but granted, extremely well-behaving one), these are much more organic looking. Like with all things, the lens can be "tamed" by a skillful photographer. Or, as I suspect, the lens can be "let loose" by a skillful photographer. ;)

Wonder, why nobody dares to mention the Canon EF 50 f/1.0 by name...

I want to think that all gear heads are also artists somewhat, as it is the photography that possibly came first and it required the gear.

But yes, I was dismayed about the sample gallery in that there wasn't one landscape shot taken wide open, or any wide-open shots focused at a distance. This lens design does look like you could actually shoot cool f/1 landscapes no sweat.

Jonas is an excellent photographer and it shows with whatever he shoots with... It looks like a great lens, but I don't see the point of it when Fuji has 56mm 1.2 with most probably close dof esp with same min focus.... Most people may not notice the difference...

The point of it is......if you make something that appears more desirable, it will sell. People that own the 56mm f1.2 and want a faster lens will buy it.....even if it doesn't really "do" anything that can't be done with the 56mm.

What's the point of any camera body or lens being made today? All the stuff that already exists is MORE than good enough to make any photograph that anyone can imagine. The point of making new stuff is SALES!

Yay for money!

The truth is that at this early stage Fuji is more content creating new lens designs than refreshing old ones. People wanted a weather-sealed 35mm, Fuji came up with a new f/2.0 design. And so on...

This is my working theory anyways. (I think when XF35/1.4 hits a 10 year anniversary then it's the earliest it'll get a refresh.)

75 may not be a very common FL for CaNikon shooters just like 85 is not a common FL for rangefinder shooters. I find it pleasing that Fuji caters to both camps :)

For me, the character of the 35 1.4, better faster AF, weather resistance, and preferring the 50mm focal length on apsc are reason enough to sell the 56 and get this.

Fuji is funny company. The imaging division is a hobby and source of pride for them and that gives Fuji bodies and lenses their particular flavor. I don't have the 56 and probably won't buy this one, but part of me really thinks about it. I'm a person that likes both clinical and artistically flawed lenses and this one might be a twofer. The weight is a real drawback. Otherwise, this is another lens that keeps me away from the lens I really need, the 16-80.

Brave man Bobby! Looks like a great lens but very expensive and bulky. I have the 56mm f1.2 but like the look of the 50mm f2. The small f2 lenses have a lot going for them.
Well, I never said I was getting on the pre order for the 50 f1 😁

That whole thought process, which took several things into account including that I will be able to start shooting some bands again on a limited basis. Went off in an entirely different direction.

As for the 50mm f2, and the other f2 lenses. They are fantastic. I actually prefer the 50 over the 56 for my portrait work. And the 35 f2 is what I've shot the portraits I like the most with. If you don't need the light gathering capability, or the extra shallow DOF, the f2/2.8 lenses are worth a serious look.

As for me and the 50mm f1. I'm going to wait until it is in at my local shop so I can try it out on camera and feel the heft.

For now I will be without a 50-56mm lens. But I do have a place for one. 50mm(75-85mm FF) has become one of my favorite focal lengths for indoor lit portraits. I also like it for shooting bands. The 50mm f2 has proven to be very very good for both. But if the f1 variant proves to be mind blowingly amazing, I will have to give it serious consideration.

Looks like the demand is way higher than Fuji anticipated. With so many preorders there may be a delay in shipping while Fuji tries to produce as many as possible.

In cases like this, I prefer to be in the second or third wave of buyers. New lens... a pressure to produce as many as possible to meet initial demand... what could go wrong?
