Leica 7Artisans 50/1.1, Nokton 50/1.1, and Jupiter-3+ 50/1.5 Visit Gunston Hall

Brian

Product of the Fifties
The Second “informal Comparison” is between the 7Artisans 50/1.1, Voigtlander Nokton 50/1.1, and Lomography Jupiter-3+ 50/1.5 at Gunston Hall, home of George Mason, in Northern Virginia. All three lenses equipped with Y2 filters and hoods for the M Monochrom, a heavy tripod used for the M Monochrom. “Walking Around” comparisons in color with the M9, the Nokton and 7Artisans used with UV/IR cut filters and hoods. 7Artisans and the Nokton used at F1.1, F1.5, and F4. Jupiter-3+ used at F1.5 and F4. The J3+ is optimized for F1.5 and an Orange filter, using a strip of Mylar tape on the RF cam to compensate for the shift of the Orange filter. The Y2 filter- there is a slight close-focus.

Heavy cloud cover this week, no rays of sunshine coming through the trees like last week. The lighting was relatively constant throughout the comparison.

If you want the most highly corrected “objective of extreme rapidity” (as Zeiss described the 1920s F1.4 Biotar) and want to spend under $3000, get the Nokton. At $900 new, and as low as $600 used- it’s a steal. If you want small and fast, the Jupiter-3+ is the best embodiment of the classic 7/3 Sonnar in Leica mount ever made. The 7Artisans- must have been built on a dare, push the 50mm Sonnar to F1.1, build it in M-Mount, and sell it for less than any other new M-Mount lens on the market. After all, the Nikkor-SC 5cm F1.5 is the lens that put Japan on the optical Map and it’s a Sonnar. The 7Artisans 50/1.1 is like a roller coaster ride for light coming into the camera. Center-sharp, field-curvature makes the corners look soft. On an M8 or crop sensor camera, the soft corners are cut out. This is a great speed lens for an M8- will be the subject of another test. The 7Artisans lens does not have a “plane of focus”, it’s more like a flattened parabola convolved with a sine wave. Yes- this is an eccentric lens. The world would be boring without some eccentricity. Don’t buy this lens to shoot brick walls, get it for shooting a 3-dimensional world. Or just get it ‘cause it is built for speed.

These are points that I fully agree with, Brian. I bought a Nokton 50/1.1 (used) as a bargain a while ago, as you have said above, and I bought a 7Artisans 50/1.1 for special applications and for fun. I have several "old" J-3 lenses and Zeiss 50/1.5 that you have adapted, so I still have not gotten a J-3+, which is on my purchasing list.
