A Vacation Day Along the Upper Mississippi

My company doesn't allow one to roll over vacation time. Use it or lose it! So, I'm taking it off and Monday was the first day of it. Drove south and west through the rolling countryside finding interesting things along the way. I took my D810 with 28-105 & Tokina 17/3.5 along with my Nikon S-2 intending to shoot both digital and film but I ended up only shooting digital yesterday. So it goes some days :)

The 17 is the widest angle I've ever used. Still not sure what to make of it sometimes.

OTOH at the wildlife refuge, i found myself wishing for a longer reach. Going to have to break down and buy that 300/4.5 AI-S in my Eprey watch list!

Still, lots of intersting things to see as the light changed through the day. I came back to a couple of places - one called horseshoe falls (no water this time of year) was rather fun to see that way.

Still, towards the end of the day, waiting for the supper club I'd had recommended to me opened, I was waiting in the town of Trempealeau. The bronze worked better than expected with the wide angle.

The river, a tow boat & a fast moving train while having a super wide mounted at sunset was an "interesting" challenge. I'm really fond of how they came out. Thanks for looking.

Nice photos, William! I was in Alma for a few days a couple of years ago, for a wedding. Just upstream a bit from Trempealeau, I believe. I’ve wanted to return to photograph more of the area…such a beautiful region and the towns have so much character.

I see. I took the liberty of downloading two of your shots to try to see what I could see with my 'tune-up' so to speak. I guess you could say I'm not a fan of the 'HaldCLUT' profile.

HaldCLUT (Hald Color Look-up table) is a collection of profiles to mimic the look of various film types. I find them useful personally but they aren't to everyone's taste. I know folks who really like the Fuji built in ones, for example, but I like these better.

See, I don't think of most of these as too dark as I prefer to have images that reflect when they were taken. To brighten some of them more would lose my sense of the place and time they were taken; especially the late afternoon ones.

I do wonder if there might be a difference in our screens too. I have a couple of 8x12s I had printed from these that I believe look wonderful so that might be significant.

I know what you mean by this. I still think your eye could still make out more of the train detail, even in that light/time of day. As long as you're happy with them, that's what matters most. Thanks for sharing them with us.
