A walk around Wells, England's smallest city with one of its most impressive cathedrals. NB city in England historically meant a town with a cathedral although this has been relaxed a bit in recent years as more towns have been awarded city status. Anyway I digress... the front of the cathedral is currently covered with scaffolding as running repairs are made but you can still get an idea of the bulk and grandeur of the building.
The cathedral is absolutely festooned with statues. I assume medieval tourists and pilgrims would have either known who they were supposed to represent or had access to a guide of some sort (in exchange for a few groats or whatever).
The gargoyles and grotesques are also worth a look
Here's a different view of the cathedral with a cheeky sky replacement in Photoshop!
Vicar's Close is one of the most famous historical streets in England. The houses were constructed by 1363 and the chimneys added around 1470. Not many of the original mullioned windows are still intact unfortunately.
From the Close you get a good view of some nice bits of architecture. (Silver Efex edit).
At the far end of the Close is the old library used by Cathedral scholars. (Color Efex edit).
Finally, just around the corner, on the site of the original springs that gave the city its name, is the Bishop's Palace, which I didn't have time to explore, but here is the moat around it!
