Film a wet afternoon doing some disappointing scanning

Legend
Second roll of XP2 Super back from the minilab - this time process-only rather than scan (Pros: 60% less cash at £2.50 a roll without the scan; slightly less marks on the emulsion ... Cons: it's a PITA to preview scan 36+ frames on a scanner without batch facilities)

This was an "experimental" roll exposed at ISO200 rather than "box speed" of 400 - XP2S is supposed to have very wide latitude, and I'd seen other people's results that suggested a smoother less grainy look, so thought it worth a punt.

I have to say I'm still very disappointed with what I'm getting, but then in the "old days" I just shot film ,sent it off and got back my fairly satisfactory 6x4s without poring over huge prints with a loupe (which is pretty much what I'm doing with scans and LR of course) ... on the other hand I look at the work Antonio and Barrie produce from film and they look fine to me an much better detail and sharpness.

However, I got half a dozen shots on this roll with this apparent vignette ... not all together, and not by any means on every shot ... I thought it might be finger trouble when I was using my little Orion-15 28mm, but checking with it on the E-P2 I can't reproduce iit ... so, what do the old hands think? This is on the negative by the way, it's not an artifact from careless scanning

A pressure plate problem on the Bessa? Or a bit of carelessness in the processing?

duff processing? pressure plate? by _loupe, on Flickr

It looks suspiciously like vignetting, although it's not balanced in all 4 corners. Were you using a lens hood, or does the lens in some way have a sort of built in hood effect? That wouldn't show on your E-P2 due to the crop factor.

I've no idea what a pressure plate problem would show, but if it was a pressure plate problem it would suggest a fairly even warping in both directions. Again it looks like a problem of light fall off at the corners and I can't envisage any slight lack of pressure on the film at the corners of the frame causing light fall off, I would have expected extreme out of focus at the corners for a pressure plate problem.

Is this a first outing for this lens at full frame? If so that's where I'd start looking.

lens hood I reckon

same rain here Paul - still in Salisbury - never stopped raining since we've been here

you won't catch me getting back into film - I've still thousands to scan .......... miserable task takes ages ....... although some great "oldies" come out ....... I reckon that I'm happy with 1 in 20 of the scans - the IQ can be very "iffy" ...... and you never really know how they come out

I have had more success with scanning B & W prints

can't wait to get back to La Belle ........ tomorrow evenings boat ...... then I'll be a happier man

My wife wanted to go to Edward Heath's house today ........... but no no no

still a good trip as I got a few "ticks" as well as keeping them all happy

The thing is, it's not every frame; and this lens is not known for heavy vignetting, plus as you say it's not symmetrical. There's no hood been used.
There's one frame like this, then 4 which are perfect and then three (of which the one posted is an example) duff ones. the rest of the roll is fine (well, no vignetting anyway ...)

no go Bill, no lens hood on this little thing

pity - sometimes the vignette effect is not uniform - here's my "lens hood" effort

Paul,

I can't see this as a film processing problem, after all the film goes through a deep tank with no frames to disrupt even flow of the developer across the surface of the film. It has to be something affecting the amount of light reaching the film surface.

no all shot at f/8. nothing weird about this lens on a film camera. just had a cla by a russian camera specialist.
