Yep. Amtrak really is the best way to see America outside of what we see on the telly, you can't switch off to go to sleep or you'll miss hundreds of sights like that.
I was just looking for something in my treasures box and found an Amtrak ticket for my trip between NYC and Chicago on my way to the Oshkosh airshow in 1975!
 
A few from last year, one of my local haunts. A small 11 hectare post industrial nature reserve that started life in the 1880’s as a railway yard. By the late 1930’s it had become the largest railway marshalling yard in Europe, before going into decline, and eventually in the 1980’s part of the site was turned into a nature reserve. If you wander off the well maintained paths some of the old abandoned railway structures can still be found.

And the abandoned ballast extraction pits have become ponds and reed beds.
