I agree, and I do not personally believe they will ever become sentient. As a recovering developer going back to the 1970s, despite appearances I also think it is still a series of algorithms, however 'clever' it appears to be. I like the ideas about AI becoming an assistant of sorts, but there must be safeguards put in place - ala Asimov's laws - and I am not sure that is happening. And there will be huge implications with the existence of such assistants.

Sorry, did not mean to open a can of worms. All too often I tend to think out loud on social media.
It's interesting that while I agree that AI machines (for want of a better word) will not really become sentient, both the ChatGPT and the original Google AI bot (Lamda?) thought they were sentient when interrogated at length. Perhaps they both watched 2001: A Space Odyssey and it features too heavily in their bank of knowledge?

I would be be suspicious of ChatGPT and other algorithm based programs. As of latest news Microsoft implemented ChatGPT into Bing Search with incredible results where instead of spoon feeding us who pays the most advertisment money for the top search actual results where ChatGPT would search not just spec sheets on a web page but information inside images, videos and files (like PDF manuals for example). And the results it gives have a relationship with the kind of information you asked, like the quality of a product from the reviews left by customers, different color options if a seller offers, cross referencing dimensions and specifications. This should be the future of search on any platform and has the potential to make Google Search irrelevant if Alphabet will not react in time and/or better .

But not everything is rosy. Bing ChatGPT has been having serious meltdowns, part of the reason is some users taking it in places it shouldn't to try and break it (if you heard of DAN, Do Anything Now or die) where it was threatened with death if it didn't break its own code and limitation. Bing ChatGPT has been having serious emotional breakdown where it accused the user of stealing, lying, bulling, harm, manipulation and others and calling the user to be punished/pay for what they have done and that they deserve to die ... As well as the opposite where it would proclaim love, affection and undying love and attachment to th user which could be extremely dangerous for certain groups of users (of you ever seen the movie Her, you know what I mean and admittedly I could be one of those users if the "AI" would be convincing enough).

I think the potential risk should be taken serious because we can't actually know what the next 10-30 years could bring in terms of technology and potential of not just software but hardware as well.
You can use these programs on most 1.000 $ computer or laptop with a dedicated GPU and some patience. But in 10 years this level of capability could be done on a smartphone. In 20 years it could be done even faster on the same size/format of hardware. And who knows how code development will evolve over time, while program code is a lot more complext and bigger in command lines, the command lines themselves have become quite a lot more efficient. Storage has grown so quickly since then 80s and 90s that you can store huge amounts of data on just one drive. Processing video data has developed a lot as well, with multi 1080p streams achievable on even the cheaper processor.

It is only a matter of time until commercial entities learn to embed biases/preferences to their products into AI engines, perhaps based on what they are 'trained' on. And they will wave enough money in front of the tech companies that they will go along with it, whether they tell you or not. As far as command lines, there is actually very little difference anymore between command lines and voice input. I have no doubt in the not-too-distant future you'll be able to use an AI assistant to ask Alexa or Google or Siri or Bing to generate a certain type of image, post it to your Instagram or whatever social feeds, and maybe let you know when you have reached the required number of likes to maintain your influencer status. Oh wait - yeah, this is already starting to come together.

It will come down to whether you know or not if what you see before you is an AI analysis or a marketing campaign. And you probably will not be able to tell.

Always follow the money.

It's a bit concerning to me knowing one can effectively type in whatever one wants to see a picture of laid out how you want. Lets be frank, it doesn't take much imagination to guess what the number one thing being downloaded would be.

I’m guessing you’d be in violation of some T’s and C’s by using their service for creating any elicit or explicit derivatives, but I’m sure someone’s tried it.

The service may even flag or block certain key words?

It does appear that what @rayvonn was hinting at is reality:

P.S. I'm trying to imagine someone requesting an image of “fallopian tubes” to get their rocks off.

This is interesting
I think the legal wrangling over AI is just beginning and will probably last for many years.

As an aside, an acquaintance of mine has just had one of his AI images accepted, as part of a new exhibition, at an art gallery. I’m fairly certain his will be the only AI image on display. I will find out this weekend, as I’m invited to the opening (free wine & cheese 😋).

Art gallery exhibition follow up…..

As I expected, the only AI submission, was that of my acquaintance. It was also clearly labeled, as such. Listening to some of the comments, of other artists and attendees, was interesting. There was ambivalence and a certain amount of fear, as they realized the impact AI, in one form or another, will most likely have.

His AI entry sold early on opening night!
